This Weekend in Memphis: 11/6-11/8
Happy weekend, everybody! It's supposed to be nice out, so I highly recommend getting outside while you still can. Here are some of your options:
1. Rock'n'Romp, National Ornamental Metal Museum, Saturday, 2 p.m. - 5p.m., $5 (adults)
If you feel like you haven't been able to see as many shows as you used to since you had kids, you need to get to Rock'n'Romp. These kid-friendly daytime rock'n'roll shows feature some of the best musicians in town. This weekend, Mouserocket, Star & Micey, Sector Zero and the Hot Pink Paperclips will play on the grounds of the National Ornamental Metal Museum. You've got to bring a kid to attend.
2. Whip This! Memphis Roller Derby's last bout of 2009, Fairgrounds, Saturday, 7 p.m., $10
Come see the Memphis Hustlin Rollers play their last bout in 2009 against the Dixie Derby Girls from Huntsville, Ala. This is also the last MRD bout for hometown favorites Bloody Elle and Rollanya Asse. It's in the Youth Building at the Fairgrounds on Saturday night. I'll be working the door - come say hi!
3. Race For Grace 5K (benefiting Church Health Center), Shady Grove Presbyterian Church, Saturday, 9 a.m., $25
I love Church Health Center. They do great work providing health care to the uninsured and running one of the best gyms / community centers in town. You can run in the 5K, participate in the 1-mile family run/walk, listen to live music and play games.
4. Ballet Memphis Presents the Wizard of Oz, Orpheum Theatre, Saturday and Sunday, $20-$70
Ballet Memphis is presenting the Wizard of Oz as the opener to their 23rd season. Yes, there will be flying monkeys. Also - there are a few $5 tickets for sale (the seats are in the extreme sides of the orchestra and the backs of the balconies).
5. Memphis Farmer's Market Harvest Celebration, Central Station, Sunday, $55
The Memphis Farmer's Market Harvest Celebration is the culmination of the 2009 farmer's market season. The Harvest Celebration is an annual fund raiser for the downtown market. This year, your $55 ticket will get you food from a handful of local restaurants, including Big Ono Bakery (yum!), Cafe Society, Interim and Restaurant Iris.
If none of those things suit your fancy, check out the music and events listings for this weekend.
