This Weekend in Memphis - 11/20-11/22
It's another weekend in Memphis, and as usual, you've got plenty of options for things to do:
1. 60th Annual Holiday Bazaar, Memphis College of Art, 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday
One-of-a-kind art works by MCA students and faculty will be on sale in Rust Hall. The works vary in price and style, and the people watching is priceless.
2. Zoo Lights, Memphis Zoo, 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, $7 (non-members)
The Memphis Zoo's annual holiday lights display starts tonight with a tree-lighting ceremony led by WMC-TV's Ron Childers and the Whitehaven High School Marching Band. The first 250 kids into the zoo tonight will receive a stuffed holiday bear.
3. Memphis Tigers vs. Tennessee Tech, FedEx Forum, Friday, 7 p.m.
If you still need a reason to take the Tigers seriously this year, go watch the highlights of Tuesday's game against #1 ranked Kansas. Yes, they lost, but they only lost by two points. Two. Welcome the Tigers home by going to the FedEx Forum for their game against Tenessee Tech tonight.
4. Dan Auerbach with Justin Townes Earle and Jessica Lea Mayfield, Minglewood Hall, Friday, $20
Dan Auerbach is one half of the fantastic Black Keys from Akron, Ohio. He's on a solo tour right now with Jessica Lea Mayfield (who's on his record label, Polymer Records). Go for the dirty, bluesy sound.
5. Lighting Ceremony, Graceland, Friday, 6 p.m.
When Graceland turns on their holiday lights tonight, they're going to do it old-school. The decorations this year are retro aluminum trees, a life-sized Nativity, and, if past years are any indication, more blue lights than you can handle.
As for me, I'll be in Shreveport, La., skating with the lovely ladies of Memphis Roller Derby at the Municipal Center on Saturday. If you're anywhere near Shreveport, come on!
