This Weekend in Memphis - 11/13-11/15
Happy Friday the Thirteenth, y'all. Here's what's going on in Memphis this weekend:
1. University of Memphis vs. Jackson State, Friday at 8 p.m., FedEx Forum
There's nothing like basketball season in Memphis - the sun is shining, everyone's in a good mood, and everything is blue. Tonight is the Tigers' first official game of the 2009-2010 season (the last two have been exhibitions). Get your blue and gray on and get to the Forum to cheer on the brand new Memphis Tigers (and their awesome coach, Josh Pastner).
2. Reigning Sound, Saturday at 11 p.m., HiTone Cafe, $10
It's been a few years since the Reigning Sound packed up and moved to Ashville, N.C. They haven't played many shows at home as a band (frontman Greg Cartwright has played a few with the Oblivians). They're bringing their all-guy girl-group sound to the HiTone tomorrow night and you don't want to miss it.
3. Pretty Things Peep Show, Friday at 10 p.m., Nocturnal, $10
The Memphis Belles Burlesque troupe will be performing with Go Go Amy and Bettina May from the Pretty Things Peepshow at Nocturnal tonight. I had the chance to see the Pretty Things when they were in town a few months ago, and they're not to be missed. Expect a classic burlesque revue with skits, sideshow craziness, great music and lovely ladies.
4. Downtown Dining Week, Friday and Saturday, participating downtown restaurants, $20
I mentioned Downtown Dining Week a few days ago, but it's worth mentioning again. A bunch of downtown restaurants are serving three course meals for $20 today and Saturday. Restaurants include (but are certainly not limited to) McEwans, Circa, Itta Bena, South of Beale, Felicia Suzanne's, Bangkok Alley, Bardog, the Rendezvous and Spindini. For a full list (and menus), go here
5. Giggle Party with the Original Cyndi, Friday, Odessa, $5, BYO
Memphis arts/music collective Odessa is having a little dance party tonight. Giggle Party is a band from Texas that's been described as a four-piece GirlTalk. Original Cyndi is a local garage band. Odessa is in the up and coming Broad Ave. arts district. Grab some food at the Cove or Broad. Ave. Pizza before you head over to the show.
