Jay Reatard Isn't Going to Fall
I don't know why it took me so long to start listening to Jay Reatard. His discography is a little intimidating (the 29 year-old native Memphian has put out enough records to make me feel like I've accomplished nothing in life).
Reatard's most recent record, "Watch Me Fall", was released on Matador in August is accessible. It's not so loud and disorganized as to scare off people that like melodies and not so pop that you forget that above all, Jay Reatard is a punk rocker.
It's also got a decidedly Memphis vibe to it. The lyrics are proud and defiant and joyful. Jay Reatard knows that there are haters out there, but he doesn't care. He's just going to keep doing what he's doing, whether you like it or not.
I love that "Watch Me Fall" got a lot of national attention. It was reviewed in the New York Times and mentioned on NPR's "All Songs Considered". Jay Reatard deserves it- he's worked hard.
