This Weekend in Memphis - Sept. 11-13

It's the weekend and you need something to do. Here's the short list: 1. Forrest Spence 5K This 5K in Overton Park benefits the Forrest Spence Fund which helps the families of LeBonheur with their non-medical needs. If you're not quite up for a 5K, there's also a fun run. There's still time to register. 2. Southern Heritage Classic I was at the fairgrounds for practice last night and people were already tailgating for the Southern Heritage Classic. The game is on Saturday. It's going to be an epic football weekend as Tennessee State University and Jackson State University face off in their annual game. 3. Art on Tap The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is hosting Art on Tap tonight. It's one price ($50) for beer, food and art. The food's going to be great - Bar-B-Q Shop, Swanky's, McAllisters and L'Ecole Culinaire are catering. 4. Germantown Festival Only the Germantown Festival has the annual Running of the Weenies, a Dachshund race. There will also be a car show, rides, food and vendors. It's all happening Saturday and Sunday in C.O. Franklin Park in Germantown. 5. International Goat Days International Goat Days will blow your mind. I know - I've been. I went a few years ago to watch the anvil shooting contest. Sadly, it doesn't look like there's going to be an anvil shoot-off this year, but there are plenty of other family-friendly things to do. Meet plenty of goats, watch the talent show, walk in the Y'all Come parade or compete in the Tacky Tourist Race. If none of these things suit you, check out the CVB's events calendar for more things going on this weekend.

Thanks so much for highlighting the Forrest Spence 5k. Should be a beautiful morning for it. If people are interested in racing or the fun run, they can stop by Fleet Feet Sports in Laurelwood today from 3PM to 7PM to register. If they can't make it by today, they can get to Overton Park (the east end by East Parkway) by 7:30 to sign up there. The race begins promptly at 8 and there are categories for strollers too! Kids can also participate in a 1 mile run that will be held when the 5k is complete. The Forrest Spence Fund was founded by a couple who spent 55 days in the Le Bonheur ICU with their newborn. They understand the needs of families who have children in the hospital and work very hard to assist with a very difficult time. Thanks again for highlighting the 5k. Gregg Smith
