This Weekend in Memphis - 9/24-9/27
Here it is, your shortlist of all of the things that you should do in Memphis in the next few days. This weekend, we've got corndogs, rides, art, and more rock'n'roll than you can probably handle.
1. Goner Fest 6, Thursday - Sunday, HiTone Cafe
I mentioned Goner Fest earlier this week, but here's the deal if you missed it. Goner Fest is put on by Goner Records, a store / label in Cooper Young co-owned by one of the Oblivians. Every year, they bring indie, punk and garage bands from all over the world to Memphis for four solid days of rock. A weekend pass is $50 and individual events are $5 - $15. A complete schedule and list of bands is here. If you can't make it, I'll be blogging, tweeting and taking pictures from the festival all weekend.
2. Nuts! Over Art, Saturday, Overton Park - free!
Nuts! Over Art is a family friendly arts festival that brings together the Brooks Museum, the Memphis College of Art, the Levitt Shell and the River Arts Fest for one big day. Check out live music and dance, demonstrations from local artists and plenty of hands-on art projects.
3. Mid-South Fair / Memphest, 9/24-10/4. DeSoto Civic Center and the Mid-South Fairgrounds
Does anyone else that went to a Memphis city school remember getting out of school for Fair Day? If kids still get out for fair day, they've got a lot more fair to hit this year. The Mid-South Fair and Memphest are simultaneous events that are being put on by the Mid-South Fair. The Mid-South fair at the DeSoto Civic Center will be a more down-home event with livestock, art and cooking contests, a concert by Reba Russell, a youth talent contest and a rodeo. Memphest is it's urban cousin at the Mid-South Fairgrounds in Midtown. There will be rides, food, games and concerts by Bret Michaels and Soulja Boy.
4. Clanjamfry Scottish Festival, Evergreen Presbyterian Church, 9/25-9/27
Clanjamfry is Memphis's only festival celebrating Scottish heritage. On Saturday, there will be vendors (both local and Scottish), bagpipes, sheep herding demonstrations, bagpipes, something called the "Bonniest Knees Contest" and games (possibly involving bagpipes). Sunday's main event is the Kirkin' of the Tartans church service followed by a classic Sunday dinner.
5. One of the many theatrical offerings this weekend.
If you're looking for drama, there's plenty in Memphis this weekend. Check out:
The touring production of "A Chorus Line" at the Orpheum Theatre
"Streetcar Named Desire" at Hattiloo Theatre
"Is He Dead?" at the Germantown Community Theatre
If scripted theater isn't your thing, go to Theatre Memphis for Cage Match III, an improv comedy competition that will feature some of the funniest people in town playing ridiculous games and having a rap battle.
If there's anything you think should be shortlisted this week, add it in the comments. Have a great weekend!
