This Weekend in Memphis - 9/18 - 9/20
Anyone that says they're bored in Memphis this weekend either a total liar or putting serious effort into their boredom.
September in Memphis is always packed with awesome events, many of which are happening in the next 72 hours or so. Having trouble narrowing down your social calendar? Here's the shortlist:
1. Cooper Young Festival
Saturday, Sept. 19 (Rain date Sunday Sept. 20)
This one is a must-do. The annual Cooper Young Festival celebrates one of Midtown Memphis's favorite neighborhoods. The vendors mostly deal in art, crafts, antiques and vintage clothing and most of the stores in the neighborhood (Goner Records, Burke's Books, Lux, etc.) have specials. If you get hungry, there are food vendors (which is good as most of the restaurants in the neighborhood are completely packed for the duration of the festival. You can also check out many of Memphis's favorite bands, all in one place.
You can park on just about any side street, but be prepared to walk - the festival attracts a huge crowd. Also, some of the Cooper Young after parties can get pretty epic, so I'd suggest making a friend with someone who lives in the neighborhood who's having a party you can crash.
2. For the Love of Shirley
Friday and Saturday nights, HiTone Cafe
What happens in Memphis when a legendary local bartender has health problems and can't cover all of her medical bills? We have a party to raise money for said bills. This weekend, the HiTone is having two huge shows to benefit Miss Shirley Williams, the bartender at the Lamplighter. The shows start at 9 p.m. both nights and feature some amazing local bands - Jack O. and the Tennessee Tearjerkers, Greg Cartwright (of the Reigning Sound), Snowglobe, Vending Machine, the One Four Fives and more.
Tickets are $10 per night, and all of the money raised from the door and the prom picture photo booth (as well as ten percent of bar sales) will go directly to helping out one of the city's most beloved bartenders.
3. Girls Night Out
Friday, Sept. 18, The Brooks Museum of Art
Grab some of your lady friends and head to the Brooks Museum of Art for Girls Night Out. They're having a cocktail mixology class, cooking demonstrations, a fashion show and a dance party. Local boutiques will also be well represented - Peria, Delphinium, Crazy Beautiful, Maggie's Pharm, and Eve & Isabella are all on the list.
4. Countrywood Garage Sale
The annual Coutrywood Garage Sale is the biggest event of the season for the thrifty, crafty and hopeful. Countrywood is a huge neighborhood, and they take their garage sales seriously. People start showing up early (think 5 a.m.) to get the best bargains. Plan to park somewhere and walk - carry a backpack, bring cash, and if you're the type to buy big items, you might want to bring a handcart.
5. Social Camp
Saturday Sept. 19, Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering
I know, I know, it's a weekend and y'all don't want to work. But Social Camp isn't really work - think of it more as an excuse to geek out for a few hours with people just like you. It's a super laid back conference about all things social media. The morning is made of structured presentations and the afternoon's presentations are suggested then voted up or down. If you make it, you can expect some great topics presented by super speakers (like me - I'm giving a presentation with the lovely Zach Whitten on how not to be "that guy").
Brunching on Sunday isn't this-week-only option, but if you're planning a marathon Saturday, it's going to be crucial. Try the Majestic downtown, Cafe 1912, or Bosco's Squared. You could also just camp out at the HiTone after the Shirley Shows - brunch there starts at 11.
