This Weekend in Memphis
Here's the shortlist of the best things to do in Memphis this weekend.
1. Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Orpheum, Friday, 8:15 p.m.
The Orpheum is showing Rocky Horror as part of their summer movie series. Tickets are $6 for adults (and $5 for kids, though I'm not sure why you'd bring your kid to Rocky Horror). Costumes are encouraged, and if this year is anything like past years, there will be some very interesting outfits. You can bring your own toilet paper and toast or drop $5 on a prop bag at the door. (Insider tip - if you want to act out the show, sing, dance, etc, sit downstairs. If you just want to catch the spectacle, the mezzanine is your best bet.)
2. Memphis Music and Heritage Festival, Saturday and Sunday, Free
This free festival put on by the Center for Southern Folklore features six stages with live music of all kinds, cooking demonstrations, folk arts and crafts, dance performances (drumlines, salsa, ballet, etc.), and a "Talkers Corner" where all sorts of people from baseball players to bands can talk about their craft. Find the festival on Main between Peabody and Gayoso.
3. Delta Fair and Music Festival
The annual Delta Fair opens this weekend at the Agricenter in East Memphis (near Shelby Farms). The festival has something for everyone - bands (Alexis Grace, Boys Like Girls, Vince Gill), Mixed Martial Arts, rides, a rodeo, roller derby and vendors. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for kids.
4. University of Memphis v. Ole Miss
The Tigers' season opener this year is against rival Ole Miss at the Liberty Bowl. If you make it to the Liberty Bowl, know that the tailgating is likely to be epic - Ole Miss doesn't mess around. Can't get tickets? ESPN is showing the game. Kickoff is at 2:30 on Sunday.
Or, you could just enjoy your holiday weekend barbecuing, chasing your dog around Overton Park, checking out the farmer's market or doing something else.
