Saturday was a little overwhelming
After two weeks of nearly incessant rain in Memphis, I was really excited to get out of the house . So excited, in fact, that I left to go to Overton Park for Woofstock without my dog. I turned around, went home and picked him up so that he could frolic with the puppies up for adoption at Woofstock.
Loads of local shelters brought adoptable dogs to the park and local pet clubs and doggie daycares were there to offer information. There was also a booth with rabbits, which seemed an odd choice for an event mostly involving dogs.
After Woofstock, we headed over to the space between the Memphis College of Art and the Brooks Museum for Nuts Over Art, a family-friendly art festival.
There were tons of families out checking out demonstrations by local artists, making paper bag hats, listening to stories and running around in the field in front of Levitt Shell. There was also a mime:
After Overton Park, I headed over to Murphy's for the afternoon Gonerfest shows. I caught part of the Girls of the Gravitron set outside. They're a local noise rock band and everybody outside seemed to enjoy their set.
About halfway through the Girls of the Gravitron set, I went inside to see the River City Tanlines. They're one of my favorite local acts, largely because I want to be Alicja Trout when I grow up.
I had an awesome front-row standing spot and I was enjoying their set until a rather hirsute gentleman in too-tight white tights and a red t-shirt covered in glitter came flying through the crowd, leaving a rain of spilled beer in his wake. He made his way to the stage, jumped up and grabbed the mic from the Tanlines' bassist and started shouting into it. When he was done, he started bouncing around in the middle of the crowd, spilling beers, hitting people and causing general glittery havoc.
At that point, I decided it might be time for me to back away slowly and head back into the sunshine.
