No Inside Voices Necessary
If you're going to visit the Children's Museum of Memphis, know that having a kid isn't necessary - all are welcome. But, having a kid with you will probably make things a bit less awkward.
I hadn't visited CMOM in about 15 years, so walking inside was a bit of a shock. The museum was nothing at all like I remembered. Long-term exhibits are in different places, it was completely maze-like, and there's so much more to see and do now.
That said, my first stop was the miniature grocery store. Judging by what I heard from other Memphians before I left for the museum, the grocery store is everyone's favorite part. It's been moved and updated, but you'll be relieved to know that some things never change.
I'm an adult. I have to grocery shop with real money for real food. But I couldn't resist filling up a cart with giant plastic lobsters and cheese and empty boxes of ice cream.
After the grocery store,https://ilovememphisblog.com/wp-admin/post-new.php I stopped by the stage. During the day, karaoke contests and story time is held at the stage. When nothing scheduled is going on, kids are encouraged to don costumes and put on shows. I met some awesome young ladies who were on a field trip from Christ the Rock who didn't mind me crashing their dance party (the girl in the Cookie Monster hat does a mean Michael Jackson).
One of the things I loved about CMOM were the exhibits that encouraged action - something to climb, a plane to fly, art to create, books to read or cars to repair. There are not one, but two places to bust a move.
The museum places a big emphasis on learning, and classic exhibits like the dentist, the bank, and the skyscraper are still at the museum. Newer exhibits include a TV station, an outdoors exhibit with a device that will give your paper plane perfect aim, and a model of the Mississippi river, complete with water.
CMOM has rotating special exhibits, as well. Currently, there's a multilingual traveling exhibit about toys on loan from Canada called Top Secret: Mission Toy. It features toys from around the world and gives kids the chance to play detective while learning about the importance of toys.
One of the main things I learned was that I'm finally too big for playground equipment. I tried to shimmy into the model house, but got freaked out that I would get stuck in one of the tubes and would ultimately have to be pulled out by my feet as kids laughed at me.
