Taste Test: J. Brooks Coffee from Urban Farms Market

Taste Test: J. Brooks Coffee from Urban Farms Market

J. Brooks Coffee, Memphis, Tenn. I picked up this package of made-in-Memphis J. Brooks coffee at the Urban Farms Market earlier this week. They had a few blends in stock, but I figured it was appropriate to start with the "Spirit of Memphis", which, according to the bag is "full bodied with traces of sweetness" (hey, just like us!). It's not the most amazing coffee I've ever had in the history of ever, but it's smooth and drinkable, about on par with whole bean Starbucks coffee. The best part? It's only $8.69 per 12 oz., making it more affordable than most locally roasted brands. Plus, when you combine it with a packet of chicken flavored Kung Fu Ramen, it's kind of like being in college all over again.

Hi Kerry, The Cooper-Young Community Farmers Market also carries the full line of J Brooks coffee, and we brew up Spirit of Memphis and dark-roast Onyx every Saturday. The best thing going this summer is our cold-brewed Onyx served over ice. Come on by and ask for a taste!

Farmers markets are a great place to get artisan-style creations like fresh roasted coffee! Good luck to these guys! Great coffee is hard to find.

The competition is strong in Memphis for fresh locally roasted coffee beans, they include Lamberts coffee service and their recently acquired Ugly Mug brand, next is McCarter's Coffees, and then J Brooks as a new commer on the scene. J Brooks master roaster, John Pitman was formally the head roaster for the origional Ugly Mug before the Lamberts acqusition. Then there is the collaboration between True Blue Coffee Roasters and Brother Juniper's Restaurant who has their's specially blended for their restaurant, though True Blue is out of Old Fields, West Virginia. Also, there is Republic Coffee house that has been roasting their in house coffees, available to take home. So there are choices in the Memphis area I urge you to support for great coffees, all you need to do is try them all and you'll never find yourself in need of supporting that Seattle roasted stuff anymore!

I've been making V60 Pour over coffee, and trying to find the right level with J Brooks, "Spirit of Memphis." I just can't seem to find any temp or grind that makes the coffee taste good. It's way too strong any way I brew it. It has a burnt aftertaste. I was told by a coffee house in MS that Spirit of Memphis is a bold medium.. so it seems that my test results are correct. I kept wondering and still some if I'm not pouring the V60 accurately enough, but I also stuffed some into my Keurig refillable K-Cup... and I still didn't care for it. I was told to try, "True North." I guess it will be next.
