Memphis' Other TV Show: Police Women of Memphis

Memphis' Other TV Show: Police Women of Memphis

Nevermind how I felt about that other cop show about Memphis, I have a total soft spot for  TLC's "Police Women of Memphis". The reality show follows MPD officers Andrea Olson, Arica Logan, Joy Jefferson and Virginia Awkward (whose name tag reads "V. Awkward") as they patrol the city. Think of it as the anti-"Memphis Beat". It's a reality show, not a narrative (though some of the scenes come off as being a little scripted). The officers on the show aren't caricatures and the city doesn't really play a starring role. The crimes on "Police Women" run the gamut. Some of the calls are completely routine, some are absolutely ridiculous (like the man who's roaming the neighborhood in his tightey whiteys), and some are tragic (drowning victims, domestic violence and fights). I've heard a lot of people say that they dislike "Police Women" because it focuses on crime in Memphis. I get that - I wish we didn't have any crime to spotlight. Most of the crime on the show (like most of the crime in Memphis) is between people that know each other in parts of town that tourists aren't likely to frequent. What I find most redeeming about the show is how proud it makes me of our police force. All of the featured officers are tough, smart, and compassionate while handling some very unpleasant situations (if you need an example, check out this post about Officer Jefferson standing up for some transgendered women). It's seriously impressive. You can catch "Police Women of Memphis" on TLC at 7 p.m. on Thursday nights, or watch full episodes online.

The show doesn't portray the city as having any more crime than any other large-ish city. Plus, the women are super kick ass

Sure we all wish there was no crime to highlight in Memphis, but why highlight it at all?Sure our police force is great, but don't they have enough to worry about besides a camera? Honestly, I feel that the Police Women of Memphis is a better show than Memphis Beat, but I feel that both cast our city in the wrong light. Crime and punishment should not be what is best known about Memphis and both shows represent a major PR problem for the city. Shows like Law & Order show crime in NYC, but that is not the major focus of the show. There is both story and meta-story in shows like Law & Order and CSI (Miami, LV and the original). Although PWOM does better than MB both miss the mark in my book on representing what Memphis is truly about: Music (Rock and Soul), Medicine (The Med, LeBonheur, St. Jude), Business (FedEx, International Paper, Autozone), Sports (Grizzles, Tigers, etc.), Food (BBQ!) and Outdoors (Mississippi River and Parks, Shelby Farms).

I'm undecided on if the show is good for Memphis or not. But my wife and I LOVE to watch it. To be honest I'm not sure I'd watch this show if it wasn't in Memphis. All in all, I wish they would highlight some of the positive dropping crime statistics our MPD has worked so hard to accomplish. Even a little text at the beginning or end telling something positive about Memphis would go a long way. I've heard rumor our city officials are trying to figure out if they want to let TLC do another season. They are already finished filming this season.

I like the show but would not want to be a male Officer working with thesse otherwise capable women Officers. I have watched numerous episodes and to date have never seen any of these women actually book the criminals they either arrest or help arrest. This is a part of the job and I hate kiss-offs. You catch them, you clean them. (Retired Officer with 35 years on the job.)
