5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 1/4 - 1/6

Happy first Friday of 2013! Here are five fun things to do in Memphis this weekend:

1. Watch the Tigers play UT, ESPN2, Friday, 7 p.m., free

Tonight, your Memphis Tigers take on the University of Tennessee for the last time (at least, for the forseeable future). They're playing at UT, so belly up to your favorite bar, go to the official U of M Alumni watch parties, or grab some friends and scream at the TV in the privacy of your own home. The game is on ESPN2 (Comcast channel 24) and on WREC AM 600.

2. Cycle Memphis January, Cooper-Young Gazeebo, Saturday, 7 p.m., free

Cycle Memphis January Ride, Memphis, Tenn.

It's cold, but the free monthly Cycle Memphis ride must go on. Hop on your bike and meet up with dozens of likeminded Memphians at the Cooper-Young gazeebo for a medium-paced 15 mile ride. The ride leaves at 7:15, and be sure to bring your helmet, a bike light, and a patch kit if you've got one.

3. Aloha Elvis, Cannon Center, Saturday, 7:30, tickets start at $15 (Students are $5)

The Memphis Symphony is wishing Elvis a happy birthday on Saturday with their annual birthday pops concert. Don your best Hawaiian shirt - this year, they're recreating Elvis' 1973 "Aloha from Hawaii" concert in full at the Cannon Center.

4. The Sheiks with Modern Convenience and the Act Rights, Buccaneer Lounge, Saturday, 10 p.m., $5

Two Memphis garage bands (The Sheiks and Modern Convenience) are teaming up with Austin, Texas band the Act Rights for a night of loud, fast rock'n'roll at Memphis' favorite pirate-themed dive bar. Cover is only $5, and you have to be 21 to get in.

5. Opera in Cinema: Carmen, Brooks Musuem of Art, Sunday, 2 p.m., $12 Brooks members /$15 non-members

The Brooks' opera film series is the next best thing to seeing opera in real life. On Sunday, they're showing the Royal Opera's production of "Carmen", a classic tale of love, downfalls and feminine wiles. Tickets are $12 for museum members and $15 for non-members.

If none of these events butter your toast, there are plenty more on the blog's calendar. Have a great weekend, and I'll see you back here on Monday.
