5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 9/7 - 9/9
5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 9/7 - 9/9
Happy Friday! It's another busy weekend in Memphis. Here's a shortlist of five events you won't want to miss.
1. Rock for Love 6, Hi-Tone / Overton Square / Levitt Shell, Friday - Sunday, Free – $10
In the past six years, the Church Health Center's annual benefit show has grown from a single concert to a four-day long music festival featuring some of Memphis' best bands. This year, there are two new, free all-ages events – a daytime street fair in Overton Square and a Sunday night show at the Levitt Shell featuring Booker T. Jones (as in, of the MGs).
2. International Goat Days, USA Stadium in Millington, Friday and Saturday, Free (parking $5)
This weekend, Millington celebrates all things goat with vendors, demonstrations, a petting zoo, goat chariot races and more. There used to be an anvil shooting contest, but it seems to have been discontinued. Admission to the family-friendly event is free, but bring some cash – parking is $5.
3. Art of Tap, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Friday, 6 p.m., $30 members / $40 non-members
Those curious about what new Memphis brewer High Cotton will be doing should get to Art on Tap tonight. High Cotton - along with 13 other brewers - are pouring samples at Art on Tap, the Dixon's annual beer tasting. There will also be live music, food, gallery tours and an optional wine tasting.
The Southern Heritage Classic is so much more than the annual football game between Tennessee State University and Jackson State University. It's also a weekend-long celebration that includes golf tournaments, music, fashion shows, marching bands, comedians and tons of tailgaiting. Here's a full schedule of events.
5. Harlan T. Bobo with Michaela Caitlin, Otherlands, Saturday, 8 p.m., all ages, $7
Harlan T. Bobo is back from France (at least, for the moment) and is playing an intimate show at Otherlands with barista-by-day Michaela Caitlin. Michaela plays darkly sweet songs on her guitar and Harlan…well, Harlan kind of does whatever he wants, but with an incredible amount of skill and feeling.
If none of these events butter your biscuit, there are a ton more on the blog's calendar. As always, I hope you have an amazing weekend, and if you're at the Overton Square Rock for Love show, come find me - I'll be the girl pushing around a Rolling Truth or Dare Machine.
