365 Things to Do in Memphis #231: Ride Your Bike at Midnight
For some people, riding a bike on the Memphis streets is a lot to consider. For the rest of you, though, there's the Midnight Classic: an all-night, police-protected bike ride through midtown and downtown. Here's what you need to know before you go:
You don't have to have to be a regular bike lane user or own some of those fancy shiny shorts to ride in the Midnight Classic. Riders of all skill and fitness levels are welcome in the ride.
Around 10 p.m. on Saturday, August 25th, hundreds of cyclists will flock to the Poplar Plaza shopping center parking lot. They'll hang out, drink beer, check out vendors and listen to live music until midnight, when it's time to ride. At midnight, the ride starts. Police protect street lanes on the ride's route, which goes downtown from Poplar Plaza and back.
Even though the Midnight Classic isn't a fancy road race, there are some prizes for the group with the most riders, best bicycle decoration and (my favorite) best costume.
