365 Things to Do in Memphis #229: Buy a Book at Burke’s

New or used, it doesn't matter – Assignment #229 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to poke around the oldest independent bookstore in Memphis.

Burke's Books, Memphis, Tenn.

Burke’s is one of the last independent bookstores in Memphis and the experience you’ll have shopping there is personal. The owners know their store well and are plenty willing to make recommendations and suggestions and place special orders.

The best thing about Burke’s Books in Cooper Young is the element of surprise. The smallish midtown store doesn’t carry a huge selection of brand new books and the new and used tomes are grouped together on the shelves. This means that the selection is constantly changing and it’s entirely possible to find a pristine used copy of a book for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
