***We have a winner!****

Congratulations to Cynthia, whose limerick about cheese cracked me up:

"Pepperjack, Brie and/or Havarti,
Put 'em on a cracker and you've got a party.
But too much cheese will block,
So know when to stop,
Or prepare to spend some time on the potty."

In honor of Earth Day, the Whole Foods on Poplar is having a local food fair to encourage people to help the local economy and the environment by shopping local. In honor of the local food fair, Whole Foods has given me a giant basket of locally-made food to give to one of you.

Local food, Whole Foods Poplar, Memphis, Tenn.

Everything in this basket of food comes from within 200 miles of Memphis. Here's what's in it:

– Jones Orchard strawberries (Millington, Tenn.)

– Braggadocio popcorn and basmati rice from McKaskle Family Farms (Braggadocio, Mo.)

– Cocoa Tree peanut butter chocolate bites (Nashville, Tenn.)

– Sonny Salt (Memphis, Tenn.)

– Willa's shortbread cookies (Madison, Tenn.)

– Thistle Farms body butter (Nashville, Tenn.)

– Yippie Hippie granola (Memphis, Tenn.)

– Tahitian bon bons from Journey to Bliss Raw Foods (Smyrna, Tenn.)

– Cheese pizza from Geadello's Pizza (Nashville, Tenn.)

– Chocolate baklava from Kallis bakery (Memphis, Tenn.)

If you want to get your hands on the food, you've got until 8 p.m. tonight to write me a (not R-rated) limerick about either a) your favorite food item or b) your favorite place to be outside in Memphis.

In case it's been a while since your last limerick writing experience, they should go something like this:

The limerick packs laughs anatomical
In space that is quite economical,
But the good ones I've seen
So seldom are clean,
And the clean ones so seldom are comical.

In order to be considered, your entry MUST be submitted by 8 p.m. tonight (April 19). No entries submitted after that will be accepted. If you don't see it on the site immediately – don't worry – I've gotten it, it just has to be approved. The winner will be chosen based entirely on my whims, so go big. Begging to win in the limerick will count against you. I'll announce the winner tomorrow morning.

If you don't win, you can always pick up every treat in the basket at Whole Foods on April 22/ During the day, they'll feature locally sourced foods (because you know that buying local is one of the easiest ways to help the local economy), the Fuel food truck, seed planting for families, and more.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

  1. Warner R. says:

The thing that I like to eat most,
is, of course, not dry, wheat bread toast,
    but instead I would take,
    the big juicy steak,
that only the Restaurant Iris can boast.

  2. Regina says:

There once was a woman from Memphis
Who had BBQ saying "Nothing can beat this!"
So she took home some meat
And some buns made of wheat
And said "Ah, now this is bliss!"

  3. Natalie says:

LOL here's my ridiculous love poem about hot wings 😛
I love hot wings, I really do
with celery and carrots too –
    The hotter the better,
    if you're a go-getter
you'll dip your wings in cheesy bleu!

  4. Rhea Palmer says:

I dream about strawberries in bed
They continue to float in my head
    They’re tasty with cream
    with sugar they’re a dream
Strawberries I’ll eat ‘til I’m dead.

  5. Lynda says:

    I have a tree, it’s pecan.
    The nuts cover my lawn.
    Gathering is a pain.
    Once, in the rain.
But oh the things I eat them on!

  6. Morgan says:

The worthiest thing of which I deem,
Is velvety smooth chocolate ice cream.
They are known for their snow cones,
Yet I've fallen for their dipped cones.
At Jerry's you'll find the dream.

  7. Anna Rich says:

Thought I'd give it a try:
I enjoy local strawberries and shortbread too.
I love Memphis, Overton Park and the Zoo.
I am a yippee hippie who cooks and who bakes
I dig local flavors and Kefir milkshakes
So give me the basket –I might share with you!

  8. Beth says:

I love a good head of cauliflower.
Saying this oft earns me a glower.
    In the oven to roast,
    Quite delicious, I'll boast,
    With a balsamic vinaigrette shower.

  9. Cynthia says:

My mom always told me not to eat too much cheese! 🙂
    Pepperjack, Brie and/or Havarti,
Put 'em on a cracker and you've got a party.
But too much cheese will block,
    So know when to stop,
Or prepare to spend some time on the potty.

  10. tate says:

My favorite food doth have not meat
Spicy sauce and tofu quite the  treat
    with empty a tummy
    it's so very yummy
Rainbow Thai at mosa cannot be beat

  11. Fran says:

Square Beans lattes are so tasty.
Those who think not are too hasty.
    Chai, mocha, honey and more,
Their aroma pulls you through the door.
Then pair it with some breakfast, lunch, or a rockin' pasrty.

  12. Memphis Matt says:

If eating locally is what you want
And shopping locally is what you flaunt,
    Then go my friends
    For it all depends
On where in Memphis your fav’rit restaurant.

  13. Katie says:

Memphis outside is best at the Shell
I hear there are trucks now with good food to sell
    I hope there are tacos
Which I'll eat in my Chacos
And dance to the music so well.

  14. Mandy says:

Outdoor fun in Memphis is a breeze to discover,
Whether biker, runner or simply "tree-hugger".
Even the wee ones have a blast,
    On a playground that's first-class.
Shelby Farms can't be compared to another!

  15. Colleen says:

My favorite place to hang outside in Memphis, Tennessee
Is on the Houston’s patio indulging myself beneath the trees.
The birds dive for crumbs as if nothing else matters
But you must avoid, at all costs, their little bird splatters
At Houston’s, you can relax, eat, drink, and leave pleased.

  16. Catherine says:

Lo! How I do love me some cheese,
I eat it as oft' as I please,
    Goat, gouda, or cheddar,
    Havarti or feta,
I will gobble up any of these!

  17. Melissa says:

Is there a Memphis location so fair
As Shelby Farms – how I love going there!
    Whether biking or running
    Or leisurely sunning,
It's delightful among the fresh air.

  18. Kate says:

Oh, mac and cheese! Oh, cheese and mac-y!
You're sometimes haute and sometimes tacky!
    Whether american or bleu
    Elbow noodles, soft shells, too!
You make my lips go smacky-smacky!

A slice of pie is sent from heaven
And fresh bread melts in your mouth when full of leaven.
    Strawberries are divine
If dipped in chocolate, oh, I shall not whine
You can find them at Whole Foods, but not 7-11!
