Random Junk Sculpture of the Week

Random Junk Sculpture of the Week

On the hill next to a train trestle that crosses Lamar Ave., there's a...thing. Actually, it's a bunch of things.

Random junk sculpture, Memphis, Tenn.

For lack of a better word, it's a sculpture that's been carefully constructed out of found objects strung through trees. There are hubcaps, license plates, a white rocking horse, a doll wearing an orange safety vest, a wig and a sign that says "safety first". You know, among other things.

I'm not sure where it came from or who put it there, but I'm glad they did.

If you want to see it, head west on Lamar. It'll be on the right, just past Willett.

Hmm...wonder how old that is? It's not on Google Street View. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=lamar+and+willett+memphis,+tn&layer=c&sll=35.122533,-90.010328&cbp=13,40.13,,0,-13.54&cbll=35.123133,-90.01138&gl=us&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Lamar+Ave+%26+S+Willett+St,+Memphis,+Shelby,+Tennessee+38114&ll=35.123018,-90.011186&spn=0.00061,0.001321&t=h&z=20&panoid=V-c0LXjg1p7kif0Hr9bXvw

One of the signs on the back side calls it a "shrine to the gods of keepin em on the rail." This seems to be the artistic brainchild of railroad switchman and local musician Kenny "KHaze" Hays.

I noticed this about a year or so ago. Objects are continually being added to it.

This was SOOOO cool. To really grasp it, you need to climb a steep embankment to the top. Take a friend, it's a little scary. Also take a camera, you'll want to take pictures. Remember the creepy stick dolls hanging from the trees in The Blair Witch Project? This is like an urban Blair Witch Project.Even abandon tires have been stacked into a pyramid. Who (or what) did this. Speak up! Once again...SOOOOO cool.

This is actually really cool. The sculpture from the trracks is even better. It was done by the same local artist who has hanging sculptures on cooper and central and the green line. I almost wrecked my car the first time i saw it.

I drive by this too and it's amazing. I also found a lovely video homage of it on YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/tkevans333?blend=21&ob=5#p/u/2/yzL7S0FMpMU
