Random Mystery of the Week

Lonley Shoe #1, Memphis, Tenn.

The streets of Memphis are littered with lonely soles.

I'm not sure where they come from, but they're everywhere: single shoes, all styles, laying pathetically on sidewalks or in the middle of the street. They're not confined to one neighborhood or zip code. They exist in the way that armadillos exist - lying on the pavement, sort of artesian in nature, as though they sprang forth from the ground.

They raise a lot of questions. Where's the other shoe? Is it going to fall from the sky in a very literal "waiting for the other shoe to fall" scenario? Who does the shoe belong to? Do they miss it? How did it wind up in the middle of the street? What happens if you run over one? Why are there so many of them?

I believe the expression is "waiting for the other shoe to drop." But no, I have no idea where they come from. Perhaps the missing mates were all here: http://users.aristotle.net/~russjohn/things/shotre.html

Yeah, and it's always sad when it's a child's shoe.

I've often wondered about them. Is it someone with a shoe fetish that steals a pair of shoes but only keeps one? Or is it similar to the bottles thrown in the ocean with notes inside? Maybe someone should look inside the shoes for messages...Ahhh, sweet mysteries of life abound, often in Memphis.

Memphis has soul. Visitors add to it. They leave souls.

I have lost many a shoe in Memphis- usually somewhere in between Beale St., Tom Lee Park & the parking garage where my car is located.
