On Thursday, April 14, Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit are reuniting at Lafayette’s Music Room for one of 14 anticipated shows.
Emerging from Atlanta in the early 90’s, the band featured an array of hotshot musicians fronted by Hampton. Hampton has been a fixture in Atlanta’s musical avant-garde since helping found the ‘60s group the Hampton Grease Band. Aquarium Rescue Unit became an inspiration to the likes of Phish and Widespread Panic, who were inspired by ARU’s blend of musical greatness and madcap iconoclasm.
“They eye of the hurricane, the distressed calm, is Bruce Hampton,” said Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools.
The original group went their separate ways in 1993. A few members went on to play with the Allman Brothers, while one joined Widespread Panic. The show at Lafayette’s will be part of the group’s first sustained run since 2007.
