A Sufi Retreat: When Oceans MergeJuly 20, 10:00 am-5:00 pm
This all-day retreat, to be led by Gregory Blann of Nashville, will focus on the spiritual insights and practices that are the subject of his recently published book, “When Ocean Merge,” which covers the life and teachings of two important contemporary spiritual masters, Pir Vilayat Khan, a universalist Sufi master, and Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, a Hasidic and Kabbalistic master who also became a Sufi sheikh. Lunch will be provided. Topics will include: interspirituality, perennial wisdom and the cyclical renewal of spiritual traditions, updating our concepts of the Divine, the practice of Sufi zikr, the four worlds, and meditations on the Kabbalistic tree of life. Retreat attendees will also be invited to participate in a Sufi zikr, the ceremony of divine remembrance, on Saturday evening.
Gregory Blann has been an active student of Sufism and the world’s religions for forty years. He received initiation from Pir Vilayat Khan in the Inayati Order in 1980 and served as a representative in that order for a number of years. He met Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and began Kabbalistic studies with him in 1981. In 1990, he received initiation in the Turkish Halveti-Jerrahi Order from Sheikh Nur al-Jerrahi (Lex Hixon), and also studied with Safer Efendi. He was given the Sufi name Muhammad Jamal, and became a Jerrahi sheikh in 1994. Blann’s previous books include “Garden of Mystic Love” (on the history and teachings of Sufism) and “Lifting the Boundaries” (an account of the life and contemporary Sufi teachings of Muzaffer Efendi). He is an advocate of universal spirituality, affirming the essential core of unity, love and compassion at the heart of all the world’s great spiritual traditions.
