Southern Cuisine and Breakfast For Dinner Downtown at King & Union Bar Grocery

Southern Cuisine and Breakfast For Dinner Downtown at King & Union Bar Grocery

Forget buckets of loaded potato skins for a suspiciously low price, because there's a new restaurant offering Southern flavor in the Doubletree Hotel downtown where TGI Friday's used to be! It's called King & Union.

King & Union Bar Grocery is named for its address at the corner of Union Avenue and B.B. King aka Third Street downtown. It's right across from AutoZone Park, inside the Doubletree Hotel, which is open. The homey, hearty menu was created using family recipes from the chefs and kitchen team, so it's unique to downtown Memphis.

Think pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, huge sandwiches, Southern-style fresh vegetables, and a deep-fried sweet corn-on-the-cob.

All Day Breakfast In Downtown Memphis

This is a bit confusing, so stick with me. King & Union is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and they serve a breakfast and lunch/dinner menu doing that whole time. So if you want a late breakfast, breakfast for lunch, or breakfast for dinner, they have you covered.

On the weekends, King & Union is open from 6:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., so you can truly have breakfast all day. They also have a full bar with a specialty cocktail selection if you want to get a Go-Cup with your meal. Adult beveraginos plus hearty breakfast foods sure sounds like another downtown Memphis brunch option to me!

There's room to spread out in the dining area, which is open, and an online ordering system for takeout, which makes it really easy to keep limited contact.

This sign is all of us. (More than half of the dining room's table are closed for physical distancing.)

King & Union Menu

The breakfast menu is hearty, with classic breakfast plates and dishes like Pork Belly French Toast and Chicken & Waffles. For lunch and dinner, expect Southern home-cooking favorites like pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken sandwiches, vegetables, salads, catfish, and more.

The sandwiches are giant, including this club. They even have Delta-style pork tamales, which I didn’t get a chance to try but I’m curious about.

The simple Southern charcuterie platter comes with a heaping scoop of house-made pimento cheese, deviled eggs, pickled okra, Kielbasa, and firecrackers—seasoned spicy saltines, completely addictive.

You can get a vegetable plate for $10 (pre-tax and tip) with three vegetables and bread, too.

They day I ate lunch at King & Union, they also offered a deep-fried sweet corn on the cob with a fat drizzle of comeback sauce. What's not to love?

This place is crazy good! Try the Poboy and Tamales!!! The pimiento grilled cheesed is incredible (and incredibly rich!) and very unique. You gotta try it. Approachable, affordable, and authentic.
