10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (March 2019)

1. Dorothy Day House Family Move: Saturday, March 9th from 9am-noon

The Dorothy Day House is moving one of their families out of the House and into their Forever Home, and they need your help! Volunteers are needed to help move mattresses, beds, and clothing out of the Dorothy Day House to set up a family that is transitioning into their own home.

2. Clean Memphis’ Raines Road Park Cleanup: Saturday, March 9th from 9am – noon

Clean Memphis needs volunteers to help clean up Raines Road. This is a great opportunity to give back to your community and spend time in the great outdoors. Clean Memphis will provide all supplies needed for cleanup.

3. Playhouse on the Square: Usher for “Significant Other”: Thursday through Saturday from 7-10:30pm and Sundays from 1-4:30pm until March 24th

Playhouse on the Square needs volunteers to usher their show “Significant Other”. The main duties for ushers are greeting patrons, passing out programs, checking tickets, helping patrons find seats, and light cleaning after the show. If you volunteer as an usher, then you get to watch the performance for free.

4. Japanese Festival featuring Origami in the Garden: Wednesday, March 20th through March 22nd from 9:30am-12:30pm

Memphis Botanic Garden needs volunteers to help at their Japanese Festival. At this festival, students are immersed in the rich culture and history of Japan with hands on activities, traditional games, demonstrations, and tour of the Origami in the Garden. Volunteers will work at stations with staff to help children complete activities and learn along the way.

5.Wolf River Harbor Cleanup: Saturday, March 23rd from 9am-noon

Join the Wolf River Conservancy for a large-scale river cleanup in the heart of Memphis. Volunteers are needed to assist with litter and debris removal- both in the Wolf River Harbor and on the surrounding banks. This is a family friendly opportunity.

6.Volunteer Odyssey’s VolunCheers benefitting Make-A-Wish: Wednesday, March 20th from 6-7:30pm

VolunCheers is Volunteer Odyssey’s monthly happy hour! Join us for beer, snacks, and a quick service project at Make-A-Wish. Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age.

7.Memphis Botanic Garden’s Spring Festival of Flowers: Monday, March 25th through Friday, March 29th from 9:30am-12:30pm

Hundreds of spring-flowering plants and trees throughout the Garden create a one-of-a-kind outdoor learning environment for school children from kindergarten through second grade during this spring education festival. Volunteers will assist at different stations helping teach students and creating a fun environment! Anything you need to teach will be given to you and requires no prior knowledge!

8. Levitt Shell’s 5 Fridays of Jazz: Friday, April 5th from 5:45pm to 8:30pm

Levitt Shell needs 4 volunteers on this night to help pass the donation bucket, man the Levitt Shell table, and represent the Shell. On this night, the Rhodes Jazz Band and Joyce Cobb will be performing.

9. Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County’s Fast & Furriest 5K: Saturday, March 16th from 6am-2pm

The Humane Society needs volunteers to help with their annual 5K. It’s the only dog-friendly 5K in the city! Volunteers are needed to help with parking, registration, set up, food prep, food stations, water stations, awards, break down, and more.

10.Catholic Charities Food Pantry: every Monday through Thursday from 9am-1pm

Nearly one in four Memphians live in poverty, and one of the ways Catholic Charities of West Tennessee responds to that need is by providing weekly food boxes through our Food Pantry. These daily operations rely heavily on volunteer manpower to be successful. You will have an opportunity to directly assist your neighbors in need.
