Reasons to Love Memphis #36: The Smell

Reasons to Love Memphis #36: The Smell

Last night, a friend and I were driving through my neighborhood with the windows down. Someone was grilling out and the smell of delicious, charcoal-cooked meat was hanging in the air.

"You know," my friend said, "Some cities smell like trash."

Thankfully, Memphis is not one of those cities.

Wonderbread Bakery, Memphis, Tenn.

The edge of downtown consistently smells like Wonder Bread, the suburbs are sweet with honeysuckle in the spring, and there are days when the entire city smells like food.

What are your favorite Memphis smells?

I agree that the smells are a wonderful pleasure. I can also smell Wonder Bread at my house. There is noting like it.

The smell of honeysuckle and grilled meat in some areas is awesome. The smell of Beale Street isn't.

Downtown often smells like cinnamon toast crunch. But like...dirty cinnamon toast crunch.

Sometimes parts of Midtown smell like Corn Flakes, thanks to the Kelloggs factory.

Definitely last week in Memphis - BBQ Fest! But on a normal basis, I LOVE driving past Wonderbread factory. There is just something about freshly baking bread...

The smell of Central BBQ on my way home, and the smell that hits you when you walk into Gibson's doughnuts :)

I used to live behind the Malco Studio on the Square. Driving home I could always smell pizza at the Memphis Pizza Cafe across the street and then I could smell popcorn at night.

Honeysuckle around my house in the spring, people grilling out all throughout the year, the crisp smell when fall finally comes, that scent that tells you that winter has once again decided to visit us. Memphis smells wonderful, I love my city.

I love the way you can smell garlicky Greek food for blocks around the Greek Food Festival at Summer and Highland (on Mother's Day weekend every year). That whiff of grilling shish-ka-bobs... unbelievable. And driving past a Top's or Corky's with the windows down... any time!

the smell of beer and barbeque and burgers when traveling down midtown.. kinda the smell you'd get when walking into Huey's. Then in the spring and summer, the smell of flowers and fresh grass, especially when walking down Shady Grove on the side west of White Station (away from CBHS).
