Introducing Project 50: Fifty Ways We Love Memphis

Introducing Project 50: Fifty Ways We Love Memphis

Each year since 2010, there's been a Project 365 on the I Love Memphis blog. In the past, you've seen 365 pictures of Memphis, Memphians, reasons to love Memphis, and things to do in Memphis.

I want to take this concept to the next level. Each week for the rest of the year, I plan to feature a Mid-South nonprofit, charitable organization, or other endeavor that aims for a more equitable, viable Memphis. There are 50 weeks left in 2014, hence the name Project 50.

Let's be real here, love is more than a hashtag. My hope with this project is that you decide to get involved with at least one organization whose mission resonates with you. And by the end of the year, we'll have 50 ideas for how we can put our love for the Bluff City to work.

Later today, I'm going to kick off Project 50 with a post about the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center, which was founded 32 years ago on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.

The Miracle Center is an empowerment center for the homeless founded right here in our own city Memphis! With a discipleship structure, the Miracle Center will see the needs of the homeless through food, clothing, employment, housing, educational & grooming services. We believe that when believers come together, Miracles happen. The homeless of Memphis need more than just another shelter or handout, they need a second chance and to know that they live in a city that really cares about them.

The Midsouth Foodbank is my thing.  http://www.midsouthfoodbank.org/.  Last year they distributed 14 million pounds of food.  14 million pounds - that's a mind-boggling number.

What a great idea, Holly! I look forward to your entries and learning about the many ways to get involved in the city. My husband, Jimmy Darr, is the West Region Director of the Tennessee Golf Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 with this mission: To promote golf and its life-enhancing values with an emphasis on teaching youth and the disadvantaged. Through the TGF, Jimmy is involved with every golf organization in Memphis, from the PGA to The First Tee to the PubLinks, private and public courses and events that serve children, teens, women and men. Please consider us to be included in your Project 50.

Caritas Village is a community Center, coffee shop & cultural art center on the West side of Binghamton.  It was founded in 2006 with a mission: To break down walls of hostility between the cultures, to build bridges of love & trust between the rich & those made poor & to provide a positive alternative to the streets for the neighborhood children.  They do a lot of children's programs, art workshops, free medical clinic 1 day a week for residents of Binghamton and everybody eats wheather they have money or not.

With the news about the old ICB site on Jefferson being removed, it made me wonder what happened to ICB.  Does anyone know?  I was a regular there and at their Summer store.  Great folks.  Do they have a similar business anywhere in Mphs area?
