Bi Bim Bap from the Kwik Check

Bi Bim Bap from the Kwik Check

When Mediterranean - Korean restaurant Petra closed in Midtown [in 2009] I was worried that their bi bim bap would be gone forever. Thankfully, Petra's owner (and a lot of their most loved dishes) have moved to the Kwik Check on Madison.

The Kwik Check is one of midtown's favorite low-key lunch spots. It's part convenience store, part lunch counter. They sell the usual mini-mart goods (chips, drinks, cigarettes, newspapers, beer) along side deli sandwiches, homemade pasta salad, gyros, and the delicious bi bim bap.

Bi Bim Bap is made with savory beef (or chicken or tofu), cucumbers, carrots, bean sprouts, greens and a sunny side up egg served over rice doused in spicy red Korean sauce. It's crunchy, earthy, and the sauce gives a nice little kick in the mouth.

Don't forget to try the Bi Bim Bap burger or a sandwich. The Turk is a local favorite.

Kerry, can you please, please, please, help me find a good deli like Kwik Check or Fino's in the east memphis area. I use to work downtown and i so miss having lunch at a good sandwich shop. I would so appreciate the help and suggestions. BTW: McAlister's (too chain) or Bogie's (too pricy) dont count.

Hi, I've just stumbled upon your blog and I love it! Thanks for sharing the info about one of my favorite dishes. I was soooo sad to see that Petra had closed. I can't wait to tell my friends!

I used to live right next to the Kwik Check and I used to love how it was one of those things that every Midtowner knew, but seemed strange to outsiders. I loved the looks on people's faces when we'd take them for the first time ("A convenience store? Really?").

Just don't go during lunch time. It's so understaffed that it's absolutely ridiculous.
