Take Yourself And Your Ladies To Lunch at the Woman's Exchange
The Woman's Exchange of Memphis is a cozy East Memphis tea room and retail shop, and a Memphis institution that's been serving "ladies who lunch" (and their friends) for decades.
The Woman's Exchange has been around since 1885, a charity "helping others help themselves" with the proceeds from their retail shop and lunch-only restaurant.
The tea room is geriatric fabulous. I loved it. The women of the Woman's Exchange take orders, serve food and refill glasses of iced tea for the mostly senior citizen crowd. The menu, which changes daily, has three or four plate choices - one meat plate, one vegetable plate, and one salad plate. All of the plates come with a drink and dessert (today, it was bread pudding).
I picked the chicken salad sandwich, which came with a scoop of relish-y chicken salad, ridged potato chips, and a cup of their famed creamy corn chowder.
It's total, simple comfort food, like something you'd have for lunch while visiting your grandma at her lake house, or while perched at the diner bar in the 1950s. Maybe the cozy, cottage vibe contributes to it feeling like a blast from the past, in a good way.
Due to covid restrictions, they're dining room is limited to 50% and all the usual distancing and mask requirements are in place—and, reservations are strongly encouraged to help manage the crowd.
Best of all, you can get pre-order and pre-pay for your lunch and have it ready for curbside service. Women's Exchange, you know what's up!
If you do go in, after you eat, check out their shop, which features items from select local consignors. There are a lot of children's clothes (handmade by Woman's Exchange seamstresses), decorative housewares, books and holiday decorations.
