There's Something for Everyone at R.P. Tracks

There's a reason University of Memphis students swear by R.P. Tracks. It's practically on campus, they've got pool tables, TVs, a decent-sized bar, plenty of seating, and the menu is big.

I've been eating at RP Tracks ever since I moved to Memphis in 2005, and it's rarely - if ever - disappointed me.

Quick lunches while I did laundry at the Wash World down the street?
Post-class beers with fellow students (and professors)?
A place to bring a group late-night?
Hangover-curing brunch?
To-go meals for study groups?

RP Tracks has been there for me through all of this.

I tend to find their food - pub grub with a kick - to be generally underrated, with fresh ingredients and a little more interesting than your average cheese sticks 'n' burgers.

At this point, I've tried basically everything on the menu. My standout favorites are the bbq tofu nachos (more on that momentarily), Alpha Beta Pita with grilled chicken, Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich (you can only get it on Wednesdays now), and the black bean chili.

R.P. Tracks is definitely vegan and vegetarian friendly. Plenty of their quesadillas, sandwiches and sides are meatless or can be made meatless or dairy-free. It's my #1 favorite place to recommend that non-carnivores wanting to participate in the Memphis BBQ experience.

A slew of Memphians swear by Tracks' barbecue tofu nachos. Chips are piled high with tofu tossed in BBQ sauce, black bean chili, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapeño peppers and sour cream. One order of nachos is definitely big enough for two hungry people.

R.P. Tracks backs up to the train tracks that run along Southern Ave. There were always rumors that they offered shooter specials when the trains go by, but I'll be honest, it's been years since I convinced a server to let us take advantage of that. They did used to have a huge shooter list with such esteemed recipes as "Alien Secretion" and "Alabama Slammer" and quite a few other innuendo-laden names I absolutely cannot repeat here.

The restaurant is also Project Greenfork certified. It's a chill place, and I think Memphis could stand to preserve our more chill places. Honestly, the only thing I'm not a fan of is that the patio - right next to the door - is essentially the smoking section. And that's not that big of a deal, really.

R.P. Tracks is open late daily until 3 a.m.

And they just changed their menu recently. That added some items. Instead of book form their menu is now more like Young Ave. Deli's (meaning it's a laminated piece of paper with menu items on both sides.)

If you get the nachos, be sure to ask for the chips on the side. I know this might seem weird, but it makes them way easier to eat. And they won't look at you weird. It's a thing people do.

I can confirm the train shooters discount! It's a dollar off Tracks shooters when the train goes by every day after 7pm. (Happy Hour lasts every day until 7pm, so there is always some kind of special happening!) We are more than just a college bar, having served up great food, drinks, and service to the Highland-Walker family and community for more than 20 years. I take great pride in working at an establishment so committed to sustaining and expanding such a loyal clientele base.

Tracks is NOT vegan-friendly. They fry their chips for the "vegan" nachos in the same fryer as their chicken. I asked the server for vegan nachos and was told I could have it without cheese and sour cream but it would not be vegan.
