7 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (September 2020)
Celebrate 901 Day and the coming of fall with these seven ways to create a September of service, courtesy our friends at Volunteer Odyssey.
Here are seven ways to volunteer in Memphis this month (or anytime!)
Volunteer outdoors in Memphis
Memphis Botanic Garden: Monthly Weed Wrangle: September 4th from 9:00am to 12:00pm
Join the Memphis Botanic Garden to help remove invasive and exotic plants in their wildflower woodland! This area of the garden boasts over 50 different species of native trees and dozens of other species of native shrubs, vines, and perennials all within a 4-acre plot.
The presence of exotic and invasive plants limits the growth potential of native plants, who compete for the same resources. Our goal is to begin removing invasive plants to revert the area back to a native woodland. Following a brief training presentation, volunteers and MBG staff will tour the area to identify invasive plants to be removed. Efforts will be focused around areas that contain high densities of invasive plants, to lessen their pressure on native plants growing within the same area.
Plant debris will be collected in bags and disposed of appropriately. Tools will be provided, however, feel free to bring your own if you wish.
Memphis Tilth: Volunteering in the St. Paul Garden: September 25th from 8:00am to 12:00pm
Join Memphis Tilth in their mission of cultivating collective action for an economically sustainable, socially equitable, and environmentally sound local food system. You can join in their work at the St. Paul Garden as you clean, water, and plant in the garden. This is a wonderful opportunity to practice a hobby you love or learn a new skill as you help the community have access to healthful foods.
Memphis Rox: Volunteer Garden Day: September 19th from 9:00am to 12:00pm
Memphis Rox will be hosting their Volunteer Gardening Day. In partnership with other local non-profit organizations, volunteers will help to beautify the Memphis Rox campus and promote a Farm-To-Table approach for the local community by constructing and maintaining our very own Educational Food Garden.
This garden shall act as a learning tool for volunteers and local community members alike, to promote healthy and nutritional eating habits. All gardening supplies will be provided by the hosting party. Participants should wear close-toed shoes and dress appropriately for the weather and landscaping conditions. (Long Pants are suggested)
Be A Mentor In Memphis
MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies: Various Mentorship Opportunities available, including LITE Memphis
The Memphis Grizzlies Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to harnessing the power and promise of sport to transform lives, particularly those of children living in poverty.
As the philanthropic arm of the Grizzlies organization, the Foundation is focused on finding, funding and creating youth development programs in Memphis that help students discover and meet their potential.
MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies is the Tennessee State Affiliate of the MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership and the unifying champion for expanding quality mentoring relationships in the United States. MMG serves as a clearinghouse for training, resources, awareness, and advocacy, providing the critical link between MENTOR’s national efforts and local organizations and programs that foster and support quality mentoring relationships.
LITE Memphis: Dream Team Mentorship: Coach Mentors work with high school students for about an hour and a half each week for 16 weeks in either the fall semester or the spring semester. This position is for the full 16-week program.
Volunteers who select this opportunity must be able to commit to a majority of the 16-week semester. Mentors help students build entrepreneurial ideas and learn career skills through the LITE curriculum. Each mentor meets virtually with a group of 6 students along with another mentor and a staff member. Meetings are held on Sunday afternoons.
Volunteer to serve meals in Memphis
Memphis Rox: Neighborhood Lunch Program: September 22nd from 11:00am to 2:00pm (repeats daily)
Memphis Rox has implemented a free bag lunch program to help distribute food options to local communities during the Covid-19 pandemic. We would like to invite one (1) volunteer each day to help assist in the distribution of the bag lunches. Social distancing and face mask requirements are to be strictly enforced. This is a great opportunity to volunteer safely and give back to the community.
Catholic Charities of West TN: Mobile Food Pantry: September 29th from 8:30am to 11:00am
We still need the help of volunteers every day and have made many adjustments due to the COVID-19 to help ensure your safety and the health and safety of those we serve. Volunteers are needed to help us direct traffic and distribute food to our neighbors in need.
As a volunteer, you will be working outside under a tent serving boxes of food in a mobile food distribution in our parking lot. Gloves are provided and social distancing is enforced. We ask that volunteers bring their own face covering/mask.
