Stay A While At Comeback Coffee In The Pinch

Stay a while at downtown's gorgeous Comeback Coffee shop!

Comeback Coffee is at 358 North Main in downtown Memphis, next to the former TJ Mulligan's spot. Owners Hayes and Amy McPherson opened the spot in March 2019, and it's a beaut.

The building was built in 1895, and was a private residence for most of its life. When the McPhersons (born-and-raised Memphians) purchased it in 2014, it needed plenty of structural work to be livable. Both are photographers, and Amy is a graphic designer, so streamlines, clean aesthetics are a priority.

Their other priority, besides a high quality coffee, of course, is comfort. They want people to feel at home working, hanging out, and meeting up with friends and colleagues at Comeback Coffee. There's a sign on the wall that says, "Stay A While", if you had any doubts.

They have three taps for nitro coffee, nitro tea, and coffee soda, plus all the usual hot and cold coffee and espresso-based drinks and tea. Comeback Coffee serves Methodical Roasters beans from South Carolina, plus a rotating variety of other beans.

"We want to share what's going on in coffee culture around the country," Hayes says. "We focus on high quality coffees, but we also know that people love mochas and vanilla lattes so we'll have seasonal syrups as well." PSL lovers, rejoice!

The front of the shop is well-lit, with a view of the pyramid from the front counter seats. The back of the space is more cozy and a bit less bright.

Every seat is comfy and there are outlets everywhere. Hallelujah!

Comeback Coffee has a merch wall with coffee and home brew supplies, plus a small section for local products and makers. They also serve homemade pastries like danishes, scones, pop-tarts, and turnovers, plus sweet and savory toasts (make your avocado toast jokes now, haters) plus sandwiches, soups, yogurt and granola. You can also expect breakfast tacos on some Saturdays.

There's a neat courtyard and a finished alleyway where Comeback Coffee will host live music and pop-up events.

Comeback Coffee's hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Though they won't have alcohol on tap, the owners plan to partner with plenty of local breweries and others for frequent pop-up events and concerts. Is the Pinch in for some big changes? I sure hope so.

With St. Jude expanding and whispers of development all around, plus the area's existing favorites - Westy's, Ferraro's, Alcenia's, Roxie's, - I think the neighborhood may look totally different in the next few years.

Be sure to support those businesses mentioned above, and let me know if there's any I'm missing. The owners worked with UrbanArch Associate for their architecture and design, and they also received a grant from the Downtown Memphis Commission for finishing out the alley.
