365 Things to Do in Memphis #169: Add a Non-Vegetable to Your Veggie Plate
I'm about to show you a picture of a veggie plate that I ordered at Soul Fish. Take a look at it and ask yourself: which one of these is not like the others?
If you were able to correctly identify the bowl of mac 'n' cheese as not a vegetable, then congratulations! You're right. You're probably also not from Memphis, or at least not from the South.
Assignment #169 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to pretend like macaroni and cheese is a vegetable. Mac 'n' cheese is the most common non-vegetable vegetable, but spaghetti is also fairly common. The best places to do this are traditional, Southern meat-and-three restaurants like Alcenia's, Soul Fish, Little Tea Shop, or Stone Soup Cafe.
Let's take another look at that macaroni and cheese, which still counts as a faux vegetable when you order it as a side for fried catfish.
What's your favorite veggie plate combination?
