We Love Memphis! How to Celebrate National Travel And Tourism Week 2020

National Travel and Tourism Week 2020 is May 3-9. Instead of hosting events or encouraging travel, this year's week is all about the Spirit of Travel.

Is tourism important to Memphis?

Short answer: yes. In 2019, 12.4 million people visited Memphis for work and for fun. Twelve point four. That's not a typo. The hospitality industry includes about 49,000 jobs and 2,000 business in Shelby County. In 2018, that was a $3.65 billion economic impact.

As you can imagine, the pandemic has drastically affected that impact. That's why I'm encouraging Memphians to support their local tourism-related businesses and organizations this week.

How you can participate in this year's National Travel and Tourism Week

Here are a couple of virtual ways to show support for local hospitality businesses this week and share the "spirit of travel" in general:

1. Tag 5 Local Businesses

If you use Instagram Stories, you're familiar with a template. Save this graphic to your phone, then upload it to your IG stories. Then, tag five your five favorite tourism businesses in the blanks.

Not sure if your favorite local biz is affected by tourism? Tourism businesses can include:

  • restaurants and bars
  • attractions
  • museums
  • art galleries
  • hotels
  • shops
  • tour companies
  • music venues
  • bands, artists, and entertainers

2. Go on the Virtual Road Trip on Tuesday, May 5th

U.S. Travel will lead a Virtual Road Trip "across the country" on Twitter and will Tweet about a different state every 15 minutes. Tennessee's time to shine is 1:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m., but you can Tweet any time.

Tweet about your favorite tourism business and use the hashtags #VirtualRoadTrip and #NTTW20. You can also follow @USTravel and @ilovememphis for prompts—I'll be playing along and Tweeting about Memphis goodness all day.

Don't use Twitter? Post this Memphis graphic on other platforms.

3. Go Red on Thursday, May 7th

Turn you or your organization's social media red, the official color of NTTW. Add a red overlay to your favorite travel photo that embodies this year's theme, "The Spirit of Travel". Be sure to use the tags #NTTW20 #NTTWMemphis #SpiritOfTravel when you post. Example of what to post here.
