10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (March 2020)
Here is your list of ways to give back to Memphis this month, from photography and helping kids with homework to planting gardens and helping your fellow citizens stay safe and warm in these last days of winter.
Volunteer Odyssey is local nonprofit that matches Memphis lovers—that’s you!—with the perfect volunteer ideas, whether you’re looking for a regular way to give back or just a special day of service.
OK, here are ten unique ways to give back to Memphis in March 2020.
1. Memphis Tilth: Farm to Table Conference 2020-Picture Takers: Monday March 2nd from 8:00am to 5:00pm (multiple shifts available)
Join us for the Farm to Table Conference 2020! We will have local vendors and subject matter experts showcasing their work. Volunteers will help take pictures of the event throughout the day and share them with the Memphis Tilth team. We’re also recruiting volunteers to help set-up, break-down, and assist with the field expert reception.
2. Carpenter Art Garden: Wednesday Homework Help: Wednesday march 4th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm
Come out and help with homework after school with the children of Binghampton! There will be tutoring, small activities and educational programming! We can’t wait to see you there! First time volunteers must attend volunteer orientation beforehand.
3. Big Green Memphis: Peabody Elementary School Garden Beautification: Saturday March 7th from 8:30pm to 12:00pm
Spring is around the corner! Helping beautify the school garden will help create an inviting space for the school community. At this event you will be volunteering with Big Green Memphis staff as we prepare the school garden for the spring planting season. Supporting a local school garden by adding soil amendments which will allow it to grow produce. Please dress appropriately for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
4. Room In The Inn: Guest Hospitality: Friday March 13th from 4:00pm to 5:30pm
Your help is central to our mission of “holy hospitality” – having people present to listen to and talk with our guests during their wait helps them know this is a place where they are safe, welcome, and treated with respect. Though other duties might arise, the main focus for volunteers is to visit with our guests to help them feel welcome. Volunteers will be in the room with guests while staff handle administrative duties. Thank you for helping us serve our guests in such an important way!
Memphis Botanic Garden: Herbal Work Study – Spring Greens: Saturday March 14th from 8:00am to 11:30am
Everyone will get to go home with a handout that includes tips and recipes. Please arrive at the Horticulture Building in the south end of the parking lot between 8:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. The first two hours will be spent weeding, grooming, thinning, planting, or whatever else needs doing in the Herb Garden. The last hour will be spent learning about edible spring greens masquerading as weeds.
5. Memphis Rox: Upcycle Craft Day: Thursday March 19th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm
We’re hosting another craft event night where we upcycle our old/retired climbing ropes to make home goods and crafts that we will sell in our gear shop to customers of the gym. We need YOUR help making these items. All art supplies will be provided, but please feel free to bring anything you feel may be useful (splicing scissors, hot glue, etc). If you love crafting, this is a perfect opportunity for you to get involved.
6. Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County: The Fast & Furriest 5K: Saturday March 21st from 6:00am to 12:00pm (multiple shifts available)
We are currently looking for more volunteers to help us out with our annual “The Fast & the Furriest 5K Run/Walk” held at HSMSC. This event is a 5K as well as a dog walk and we will also be having a shorter 1-mile walk for those that would prefer not to do the 5K. We are expecting a huge crowd and for those of you who have not been here in the past, this is a huge event and it takes lots of volunteers to pull it off!

7. Wolf River Conservancy: Harbor Cleanup: Saturday March 21st from 9:00am to 12:00pm
Join the Wolf River Conservancy for a large-scale river cleanup in the heart of Memphis. Volunteers are needed to assist with litter and debris removal—both in Wolf River Harbor and on the surrounding banks. Volunteers can choose which area they prefer to work on (land or water).
8. Dorothy Day House: Sunday Sitter (Loretta’s House) Sunday March 22nd from 5:30pm to 6:30pm
We will post dates here when there are kiddos in the house that would enjoy some sitters during Sunday Prayer and Dinner. We have other volunteers that come to hang out with the families, share in prayer and a meal each Sunday. Sometimes it’s hard for our younger kiddos to sit around for 1.5 hours, so we love when some babysitters can come hang out with them. Once the meal has started, you are free to go, usually parents can handle them the rest of the meal.
9. Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy: Office Assistance Volunteer Day: Monday March 23rd from 10:00am to 2:00pm
We are gearing up for a big outreach event on March 28! Come out on Monday March 23 from 10-2:00pm and help us assemble booklets for the event! This is an indoor event, so can happen rain or shine!
10. Make-A-Wish: Volunteer Wish Granting Training: Sunday March 29th from 1:00pm to 5:30pm
Volunteering as a Wish Granter is the perfect volunteer opportunity for those who love working with kids, are detail oriented, and are enthusiastic about the Make-A-Wish® mission! Wish Granters meet with wish families to discover, plan and fulfill each child’s wish. They work in teams of two to meet with the wish child about his/her wish, plan a wish reveal celebration and create a memorable experience for each wish child and family.
If you sign up for one of the above opportunities (or find another one through Volunteer Odyssey), please let me know. I’d love to give a shout-out to you next month.
Who knows? Maybe your experience will encourage others to give back some Memphis lovin’, too
