Fried Catfish and Southern Veggies at Soul Fish Cafe

Fried Catfish and Southern Veggies at Soul Fish Cafe

Soul Fish Cafe serves up dependable, affordable Southern comfort food in a casual cafe atmosphere. The original location in Cooper Young—opened in 2006—proved so popular that there are now six locations.

There are four spots in the Mid-South, including Germantown, East Memphis, and Wolfchase, plus two out-of-state in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Oxford, Mississippi.

Soul Fish's fried catfish with greens, green beans, tartar sauce, and my personal weakness, hushpuppies.

They’re best known for their fried catfish and Southern-style “vegetables” like greens, green beans, mac ’n’ cheese, and the underrated cabbage. They serve seafood and chicken po-boys and tacos, too. If you’re not into the fried stuff, you can get most options grilled or blackened, which is convenient.

The tacos are full of strips of seasoned fried catfish, lettuce, and pico de gallo on soft tortillas folded up, they came with small helpings of guacamole and salsa.

Above: Infamous Memphis "vegetable" side, mac 'n' cheese. Soul Fish has a particularly good mac.

Soul Fish is a please-everybody kind of place, good for kids and families. Most locations have patios for outdoor dining, too. Even though Soul Fish can get packed, the service is fast and efficient.

I love that place. The blackened catfish tacos with the cajun cabbage (it has sausage in it) is my favorite meal. The spiciness is perfect. A table always comes faster than you think it will.
