Thaw Out: 7 Soups, Stews, and Hot Drinks in Memphis

Thaw Out: 7 Soups, Stews, and Hot Drinks in Memphis

When it's chilly in Memphis, there's nothing better than some fresh made soups and hot beverages to warm you up. Here's a roundup of Memphis cold weather soups, teas, and coffee.

1. Potato Soup from Huey's

Huey's is most well-known for their burgers, but if there was a Best of Memphis category for "Best Potato Soup", they'd probably win that, too...Read the full post here.

2. Exhaust Pipe Chili from the Slider Inn

The Slider Inn's chili is award-winning, has a little bit of a kick (but not too much for my wimpy palette), and it was so hot the steam actually showed up in the picture. I don't think you can go wrong with this one. There are locations midtown and downtown. Read more about the Slider Inn here and here.

3. Frogmore Stew from Sweet Grass Next Door

The soup, which is really more like gumbo, is loaded with corn, potatoes, slices of house-made sausage...Read the full post here.

4. Chang Mai Noodles from Bhan Thai

Since the bowl is about 80 percent substance and 20 percent soup, and it's plenty big enough for leftovers, the Chang Mai noodles are pretty much the perfect winter food...Read the full post here.

5. Ginger Tea from Otherlands

The ginger tea from Otherlands might not be able to cure or prevent the common cold, but it certainly doesn't hurt...Read the full post here. Otherlands has plenty of other hot coffee-based drinks to keep you warm.

6. Star & Micey from Cafe Eclectic

I tried this Cafe Eclectic drink (named after Memphis band Star & Micey) a few days ago at the recommendation of Twitterer @jordan_bacon_. I usually order basic coffees and lattes, so this beautiful thing, with its dark chocolate, espresso, foam, and whipped cream, seemed like a dessert to me. Twitter must like Cafe Eclectic, because when I asked for hot drink recommendations, I was also told to try the Cappucino Viennese, the Mayan Cappucino, and the Raspberry Hot Chocolate. Read more about Memphis coffee shops here.

7. Aztec Soup From Las Delicias

It's the simplest thing, but Memphians love it: the Aztec chicken soup from Las Delicias. It's savory broth, shredded chicken, onions, and cilantro. Las D serves their fresh and straightforward Mexican favorites like tacos, tortas, and guac from three Memphis locations. It's all affordable, too. If you want some extra warming, go for a margarita. It's the only time you'll find me drinking tequila, because theirs are fresh and tart rather than syrup-y and sour. Read more here.

Pho Saigon's excellent pho soups should definitely be on here! They are what I always crave on a cold day or when I feel stopped up. Hot chicken pho with siracha will warm anyone up. :)

Agree with Heather about pho needing to be on this list, but in my opinion the best pho in town is at Pho Binh. I've tried them all and that place is as authentic as it gets!

I love the chicken and rice soup at El Porton. Buy the cup ($2.99) because it's really a bowlful and enjoy big shreds of tender white chicken, rice and an avocado slice or two all swimming in a flavorful broth with a healing little kick of spice. I get the large bowl to-go when I have a cold. It may not be a cure but it sure makes me feel better.

Amerigo has an awesome shrimp bisque. And can't forget about La Baguette's tomato soup and Davis Kidd's tomato bleu cheese soup; those are both pretty great too.
