For the uninitiated, the Indie Memphis Film Festival is our city’s standout film festival showcasing hundreds of films across a variety of genres. There is live music before films, opportunities to meet directors and cast members, and quite literally a film for every interest.

A few points of note:

  • This year’s festival runs from Oct. 24-29 at different venues near Overton Square.
  • Dozens of films will be screened. Check out the full, long list here.
  • Many Memphis-based filmmakers will have works featured, and many filmmakers will be traveling from out of town

While there are dozens of great films that will be playing, here are few of note:

  • "Anatomy of a Fall" won best film awards at Cannes
  • “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt", distributed by A24, is from Raven Jackson, who was awarded the 2019 Indie Memphis Black Filmmaker Residency for Screenwriting
  • "May December" with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore is a big awards contender
  • "Black Barbie: A Documentary" tells the story on the first Barbie made to represent a Black woman
  • "The Blues Society", a documentary on the Memphis Country Blues Festival, will have its world premiere at Indie Memphis Festival
  • In addition to new films enjoy comedic classics like "Friday", "Scary Movie", and "White Chicks"
  • JUST ADDED: "American Fiction," Cord Jefferson's highly anticipated director debut featuring stars Jeffrey Wright, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Adam Brody. This one may also have some buzz around it come awards season.
