Create Your Space 901: What Should We Do With These Beautiful Buildings?

Create Your Space 901: What Should We Do With These Beautiful Buildings?

Overton Park will experience some big changes in the coming years, since MCA and the Brooks will both leave their buildings. Do you have a vision for the spaces? If you have ideas, the City wants your proposals, and they've extended the deadline to receive those until May 10th. Read on to find out how to submit your Create Your Space idea.

Memphis College of Art will close in the spring of 2020. If all goes according to plan, the Brooks Museum will move downtown by 2022. This leaves two of midtown's most beautiful buildings vacant, in a park that is historic and popular.

While I'm sad to see these two institutions go, it's also an opportunity to reshape the area. That's where you come in. Got ideas for what to do with the Brooks, MCA, or both? The City of Memphis is doing a Create Your Space submission process, so you can send in your ideas. They'll take a deeper look into the best ideas.

If you're going to submit something, make sure it fits in their four principles, which you must read here (scroll down to "Guiding Principles") but basically it needs to be accessible, enriching to the park and community, and financially sustainable.

A few weeks back, Cerrito and Akers and I brainstormed and discussed some rather...creative ideas for these spaces as a part of our Cerrito Live Think Tank radio segment series. You can listen to that clip here.
