10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (May 2019)
This is a big month for volunteering in Memphis! Honor our city’s bicentennial month with loads of fun ways to give back and share your time and talents, via Volunteer Odyssey. A couple of these are this weekend, so sign up today!
1. Dorothy Day House’s Café Du Memphis: Saturday, May 4th from 7am-2pm
The 5th Annual Cafe’ du Memphis presented by the Rotary Club is designed to raise money for the Dorothy Day House; one of few local organizations designed to keep homeless families together. Guests are treated to shrimp and grits, coffee and beignets. Volunteers are needed to serve as servers, cashiers, assist with set up and break down of tables and chairs, as well as hosts and hostesses.
2. YMCA’s Cinco De Moe’s 5K: Saturday, May 4th from 7am-10am
Get ready for the 2nd annual Cinco De Moe’s 5K benefitting YMCA of the Mid-South. Event features include: Moe’s tacos, margarita flavored sports drink at every water stop, free chips and salsa, and more. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, hand out tacos, and distribute water to runners and walkers.
3. Memphis Botanic Garden’s World of Plants: May 1st through May 10th from 9am-1pm
Take your students on a trip around the world without ever leaving Memphis! Students “travel” to Africa, Asia, India, Europe, and the Americas where they will learn how different cultures use plants in their daily lives. Volunteers will assist by being a “tour guide” and teaching the children who visit about different cultures! This festival is very hands on and fun! Any information you need to teach will be given to you.
4. Levitt Shell 2019 Spring Season: every Thursday through Sunday starting May 30th until July 21st
Join the Levitt Shell in Overton Park as a volunteer in our 10th Fall season of free music in Memphis. There are multiple volunteer opportunities Thursday through Sunday each week. Help us make it happen by volunteering your time & talents. We will give you a volunteer t-shirt & badge which you will wear at events to identify you as a volunteer to the audience. Become a part of the Levitt Shell Family and join us on a mission of community and music!
5. Wells Fargo Presents: A New Century of Service in partnership with United Way and Volunteer Odyssey: Wednesday, May 22nd from 7:30am-noon
On May 22, join like-minded Memphians for a day of service and celebrating all that is good in the city by taking time to give back. United Way of the Mid-South and Volunteer Odyssey are hosting service projects across the city, and we invite you to participate. Join us at the Pipkin Building for a morning rally to kick off A New Century of Service. You’ll receive a welcome from the Memphis and Shelby County Mayors, your free t-shirts, breakfast, and instructions for your project.
6. CodeCrew Memphis in May Hour of Code: Saturday, May 11th from 9am-2pm
CodeCrew’s Hour of Code, sponsored by FedEx, is open to ALL kids in grades 5-12. They will spend one hour learning coding skills and then hear a featured speaker during a hearty lunch. To successfully execute this event, we are looking for technical and non-technical volunteers. All volunteers will receive a t-shirt and lunch.
7. Playhouse on the Square: Usher for “Cabaret”: Thursday, May 2nd through May 26th
Playhouse on the Square needs volunteer ushers for their upcoming show, “Cabaret”. The main duties for ushers are greeting patrons, passing out programs, checking tickets, helping patrons find seats, and light cleaning after the show. The big perk of ushering at Playhouse is you get to watch the performance you usher for free!
8. Page Robbins Adult Day Center Volunteer Orientation: Tuesday, May 21st from 4-5:15pm
Page Robbins Adult Day Center provides unique and uplifting daytime care for adults with memory loss, in a safe environment, while empowering and educating their caregivers and the community. At our volunteer orientation session you will learn more about Page Robbins and the exciting opportunities available to you as a volunteer. You will be able to take a tour, ask questions, and tell us more about you so that you can be best matched with roles that fit your interests. Memory loss is sad, but we are a very happy place! We would love for you to be a part of our joy-filled days.
9. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Botanical Bars: Thursday, May 30th from 5:30-9pm
Join the Memphis Botanic Garden for an evening of botanically inspired adult beverages, food, music and more! Volunteers will assist with keeping tables clean and clear, assisting with food, and helping us create a fun and entertaining environment! Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age.
10. Catholic Charities Food Pantry: every Monday through Thursday from 9am-1pm
Nearly one in four Memphians live in poverty, and one of the ways Catholic Charities of West Tennessee responds to that need is by providing weekly food boxes through our Food Pantry. These daily operations rely heavily on volunteer manpower to be successful. You will have an opportunity to directly assist your neighbors in need.
At Volunteer Odyssey, our goal is to connect you with your ideal volunteer opportunity, so if none of these strike your fancy, click here to check out hundreds more volunteer opportunities based on your interest, skills, or availability.
If you sign up for one of the above opportunities (or find another one through Volunteer Odyssey), please let me know. I’d love to give a shout-out to you next month.
Who knows? Maybe your experience will encourage others to give back some Memphis lovin’, too.
