10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (April 2018)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to give back. Here are ten ideas for April.
1. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Spring Festival of Flowers: April 3rd through April 5th from 9am-12:30pm
Come enjoy the hundreds of spring-flowering plants and trees embedded throughout the Memphis Botanic Garden. This atmosphere creates a one-of-a-kind outdoor learning environment for school children from kindergarten through second grade during this spring education festival. Stations throughout the Garden feature discovery activities and take-home crafts. Volunteers will assist at different stations helping teach students and creating a fun environment! Anything you need to teach will be given to you and requires no prior knowledge!
2. Shelby Farm’s Down to Earth Festival 2018: Saturday, April 7, 6:30 am -5:30 pm
Celebrate sustainability at the biggest Earth Day festival in the Mid-South! Join us for a day full of live music, high-adventure play, eco-friendly vendors, local/sustainable food options and clean, green fun in one of the country’s largest urban parks. Volunteers ages 16+ needed to help with the event stage, activity areas, exhibitors, crafts and parking.
3. The Red Cross Experience: Thursday, April 12, 6:00 pm -7:00 pm & Saturday April 21, 9:00 am -10:00 am
The Red Cross Experience provides an overview for the American Red Cross. During this 1-hour session, you will receive information about the Red Cross’ five lines of service, our local service delivery and impact, and what it takes to become a Red Cross Volunteer.
4. Downtown Memphis Commission’s Downtown Lifestyle Tour: Saturday April 14, 12:15 pm -6:30 pm
The Downtown Lifestyle Tour will offer an exclusive look at a variety of properties within the Core and North Districts of Downtown Memphis showcasing living spaces in historic and rehabbed buildings along with residences in brand new developments and a sneak peek at what will be the leading home in the nation in eco-friendly design! Volunteers will assist with making sure all guests that enter the home have wristbands. They will help with event check-in, guiding guests towards bus pick-up, and navigating/directing guest through some homes.
5. Levitt Shell’s Five Fridays of Jazz: Friday, April 6-May 4, 5:45 pm -8:15 pm
Five Fridays of Jazz is back! Join the Levitt Shell as we offer the community free jazz performances by a variety of artists. We need 5 volunteers each night to help pass the bucket (donations), man the Levitt Shell table, and represent the Levitt Shell with a smile.
6. Volunteer Odyssey VolunCheers benefitting Clean Memphis: Tuesday, April 10th from 6-7:30pm
Join Volunteer Odyssey for their monthly volunteer happy hour! This month’s Voluncheers will be benefitting Clean Memphis. Sign up to socialize, sip, and snack while completing important tasks for our local non-profits!
7. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis’ Steak n’ Burger, Thursday, April 26, 10:00 am- 9:30 pm
The longest running and highest grossing fundraiser of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis, Steak n’ Burger has been bringing Club members and donors together to share a meal for 47 years! Help make this event the best one yet by volunteering your time, no matter how long you are able to commit. Volunteers are needed all day to prepare for the event, as well as during the event to help with programming, and after the event to assist with cleanup.
8. Catholic Charities Volunteer Saturday, Saturday, April 28: 9:00 am- 12:00 pm
Catholic Charities of West Tennessee needs your help as we transition our Clothes Closet from fall/winter to spring/summer. This is a great opportunity to volunteer with your family and make a difference in the lives of many in the Memphis community.
9. Germantown Municipal School District Festival, 5K, 1 Mile Color Run: Sunday, April 29: 8:30 am- 4:30 pm
This race for education will be a fully timed & competitive 5K run/walker friendly event. Volunteers are needed to hand out fruit and water, check IDs, help set up and manage vendors, assist in watching the moon bounces, throw color on the color-runners, or help with clean up.
10. Refuge Memphis Manna and Health Fair: Saturday, April 28th from 7:45-10:30am
In addition to Refuge Memphis’ grocery and clothing distribution, they also open their doors to the community for their annual Health Fair and monthly grocery distribution. Each family will register as returning guest or new registration and go through the program to receive free groceries. Volunteers are needed to assist with registration, to serve as greeters and provide hospitality, and for parking lot management. In addition, bilingual help is greatly needed.
