Happy Friday, Memphis! Here are five things to do this weekend, plus a few extras.

1. The Color Purple, Orpheum Theatre, through Sunday, various times, $20 +, 13+
This heartfelt tale of black Southern women overcoming adversity in Broadway musical form. Read more in this interview with actress Nikisha Williams.

2. Crosstown Brewing Grand Opening, 1264 Concourse Ave., Friday, 4 p.m. – 10 p.m., free to enter, all ages/kid-friendly
Memphis has a new taproom and it finally opens tonight. They’ll have five beers on tap, including the special 9.5% ABV Russian Imperial Stout. I’m sure it’s going to be slam-packed tonight, but Crosstown Brewing is also open noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with regular hours henceforth. Read more.

3. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Pink Palace, Saturday – Sunday, 4 p.m., $15 – , all ages/kid-friendly
The perfect rainy day activity: take the family to a museum + a classic sci-fi movie, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. The ticket prices above reflect admission to the Pink Palace plus the afternoon movie on the big screen. Right now, the Pink Palace has all its usual natural and Memphis history exhibits, plus a new one on South American gold.

4. Time Warp Drive-In: Soul Cinema Dance Party, Summer Drive-In, Saturday, 7 p.m., $10, bring kids at your own risk
The Time Warp is showing Breakin’ and House Party this Saturday night. Read more.

5. You Look Like Show, P&H Cafe, Saturday, 9 p.m., $8 21+
Get in some laughs at this clever insult comedy show at midtown’s poorest and hungriest dive bar. Who will leave with the crown?

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
