5 Reasons To Go To Cooper Young Beerfest 2017

The eighth annual Cooper Young Beer Fest is on October 14, 2017. It’s one of my favorite festivals in town, and I’m writing this last minute post because there are still just a few tickets left on sale for Saturday’s event. Get yours now before they sell out.

Here are five reasons to go this year:

1. Shorter beer lines.

This is the big one that sets the CY Beer Fest apart. Limited number of tickets/humans means less long lines for beer, which means more beer for you to taste. You’ll get your money’s worth, for sure. Trust me.

2. There will be a ton of regional and local beer.

This year, there will be 31 regional breweries and several home-brew clubs. This is a big part of what makes the CYRBF so cool: all the breweries represented at the Fest are all from places within about a day’s drive of Memphis.

Half of my tasting card, halfway through, from a few years back.

3. Every brewery sends an ambassador.

Here’s another one that sets Cooper Young Beerfest apart: each brewery is required to send at least one person who is knowledgeable about their beer in case, you know, you want to nerd out about it. Yes, volunteers will be there to help pour and keep things moving, but you’ll at least have someone who knows something about the tasty brew you’re quaffing. Surprisingly, this not standard at most beer festivals.

They dropped “Regional” from the name, but the concept’s the same.

4. The Fest is a fundraiser for the CYCA.

Proceeds go towards the Cooper-Young Community Association, which is mostly volunteer run. The CYCA helps organize the Cooper Young 4-Miler, publishes the Lamplighter, and works to improve the residential and commercial locations in the neighborhood.

5. Anything can happen at the CY Beer Fest.

Anytime you have a gathering of people who share a passion, something spontaneous and creative is bound to happen. A few years back, Chuck Skypeck of Ghost River Brewing brought out the very first bottle of Ghost River Golden. The year Memphis beat Ole Miss, the crowd was LIT and everyone was wearing Jackalope antlers. Who knows what will happen this year?

Other important things:

  • Tickets are $50 per person and you can buy them here.
  • There’s no dedicated parking for this event. Why the heck are you driving anyways? Take a Lyft or an Uber like a human being; it’s 2017 and drinking and driving is for idiots. (Unless you are or have a DD, of course.)
  • Leave the kids and dogs at home for this one, everybody needs to be 21 and up in order to get in.
  • There will be food from Central BBQ, Sweet Grass, Stone Soup and Gulf Shrimp.
  • Goner Records will be there with a DJ.
