10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (October 2017)

Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to give back. Here are eleven ideas for October 2017, including some for this weekend.

1. Downtown Memphis 40th Annual Celebration: Wednesday, October 4th from 4:00pm to 9:15pm
Come volunteer with the Downtown Memphis Commission as they celebrate 40 years of growth and development in Downtown Memphis! They are expecting 300 guests for this year’s big event, and they need YOU to help them create a fun and friendly environment for their guests!

2. CASA Volunteer Training: Wednesday, October 4th from 5:30pm to 8:30pm
CASA is an organization that seeks to recruit and train volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the Juvenile Court system. Become a CASA volunteer by completing their blended learning curriculum, which involves online training as well as 5 weeks of in-person training at Shelby County Juvenile Court. Training will cover topics such as child abuse laws and the child welfare system, cultural competency, communication skills, and many more.

3. Mempho Music Festival: October 6th to October 9th at various times
Shelby Farms will be hosting the first annual Mempho Music Festival – a two-day festival experience filled with music, food, and nature! Volunteers are needed to help with virtually every aspect of the festival, such as aiding with parking, admissions, etc. Also, each volunteer who works at least one entire shift will be granted general admission after completion of their chosen shift.

4. Memphis Paws: Best Memphis Burger Fest: Saturday, October 7th from 7:30am-7:30pm
Memphis Paws, Inc. is putting on their 6th annual Best Memphis Burger Fest on Tiger Lane! They are looking for volunteers ages 18+ to help with event setup, team liaisons, merchandise, gates, ticket sales, and more. Each volunteer will receive a free t-shirt and free admission to the Fest, which will offer over 40 different burger samples. Come out and help them make Memphis’ signature burger event the biggest and best one yet!

5. HauntedWeb of Horrors Volunteers: October 6th through November 4th
Have you ever wanted to work at a Haunted House? Now is your chance! HauntedWeb of Horrors is the #1 haunted attraction in Memphis, and they are currently looking for volunteers ages 16+ to work as actors, security, and ticket sales/concessions. You’ll have so much fun it’ll scare you!

6. Pink Palace Crafts Fair: October 13th to 15th from 7:00am to 5:00pm
The Pink Palace is looking for volunteers to help with their Crafts Fair. Volunteers will assist with kids’ crafts, country kitchen, ticketing, making donuts, and much more! Volunteers will also receive a free t-shirt and are invited to enjoy good music, shopping, and delicious food before and after their shift.

7. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Harvest Fesitval: October 17th from 9:30am to 12:30pm
Memphis Botanic Garden is hosting a Harvest Festival for elementary students grades K-4. During this event, students and teachers will be treated to some old fashioned fun in the Garden! They will enjoy traditional harvest crafts and activities, such as pumpkin painting, cider making, and cornhusk flowers. Volunteers ages 16+ are needed to assist staff in guiding groups of students and teachers through activities designed to educate!

8. Porter-Leath’s Read for the Record: October 19th from 9:00am to 11:30am
Join 2 million people around the world in reading the book “Quackers” by Liz Wong to support Jumpstart’s mission to provide preschoolers with the opportunity to enter kindergarten prepared to succeed! Porter-Leath needs volunteers at each of their preschool sites to assist with activities for this record setting day!

9. Clean Memphis’ Round the Mound Pre-5k Cleanup: October 21st from 8:00am – 11:00am
Join Clean Memphis as they prepare the Orange Mound area for the first annual Round the Mound 5K! Water and supplies will be provided, and all ages are invited to volunteer.

10. River Arts Fest: October 27th through October 29th at various times
Come volunteer at this year’s River Arts Fest in the South Main Historic Arts District. The festival will feature fine art, live music, and hands on art activities for all ages! With nearly 200 artists from around the country, the River Arts Fest has become the largest outdoor juried artist market and urban street festival in the Mid-South.

Bonus Opportunity:

11. Latino Memphis’ Day of the Dead Fiesta: October 27th
Volunteers are needed to help with Latino Memphis’ annual Day of the Dead Fiesta. This vibrant party celebrates life, culture, and tradition. There will be dancing, sugar skull-inspired face painting, authentic food, and so much more! Also, Volunteers 21+ who work a 3-hour shift will be granted free admission.
