10 Ways To Give Back to Memphis This Month (July 2017)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to give back. Here are ten ideas for July, including some for this weekend.
1. Shelby Farms Star-Spangled Celebration: Saturday, July 1st from 11am-11pm
Shelby Farms Star-Spangled Celebration is a festival of music and family honoring the birthday of our Nation. It will be a fun-filled day of music, food and fun, ending with a laser light show at Hyde Lake. This event is a fundraiser for operation of Shelby Farms Park and the Greenline, so they need your help to make the event a success. Volunteers are needed to help with parking, activities, ticketing, clean-up, and more.
2. Catholic Charities Big Mobile Food Distribution – Our Lady of Sorrows: Thursday, July 13th from 10am-2pm
Join the Catholic Charities of West Tennessee in efforts to provide food for over 300 households in the area. Volunteers will be working outside. All ages are welcome.
3. Urban Bicycle Food Ministry’s Fifth Anniversary Silent Auction: Saturday, July 15th from 7-11pm
Join us in celebrating Urban Bicycle Food Ministry’s 5th anniversary with a silent auction fundraiser. It will be a fun evening that will also benefit a community organization that feeds the hungry throughout the city. Volunteers are needed to help with setup and cleanup.
4. Catholic Charities Volunteer Saturday: Saturday, July 15th from 9am-noon
Come to The Catholic Charities of West Tennessee to help spruce up the main building and the food pantry. All ages are welcome.
5. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Sprinkler Day: Saturday, July 15th from 9:30am-12:30pm
Come to Memphis Botanic Garden for an exciting day of sprinkler fun. Volunteers will assist staff members with setup, concessions, and ensuring a fun, safe time for the children. Wear appropriate clothes and shoes that can get wet. Volunteers must be 13 and up.
6. Make-A-Wish: Wish Granting 101: Saturday July 22th from 10am-3pm
Help Make-a-Wish fulfill their mission of granting wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions by becoming a wish-granting volunteer. Wish Granting 101 gives prospective volunteers the opportunity to learn more about Make-A-Wish Mid-South, the wish process, and the exciting steps to making wishes come true. Registration for training is required to ensure adequate training materials and seating are provided.
7. Carpenter Art Garden’s Tuesday Art Garden: Every Tuesday, 3:45-5:15pm
Come to the Carpenter Art Garden on Tuesdays and work with neighborhood children and adults, as well as local artists to transform a blighted lot into a place of beauty. Volunteers will work with children on permanent art installations, take home art projects, and tend to the garden boxes. Please wear clothes that can get dirty. Ages 13 and up.
8. JobLINC Career Fair: Thursday July 27th from 8am-3pm
The 2017 JobLINC Career Fair helps match job seekers with various companies. The fair gives job seekers an opportunity to give their resumes to potential employees and land on-the-spot interviews. Volunteers must be able to attend the orientation/training session on Wednesday, July 26th at 3pm. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
9. Volunteer Odyssey’s VolunCheers benefitting Memphis Botanic Garden: Tuesday, July 11th from 6:00-7:30pm
Join Volunteer Odyssey for a volunteer happy hour. It’s a great way to fit volunteering into your busy schedule and meet new people. Drinks and snacks are provided. Must be 21+
10. Pack Produce Bags with Bring it Food Hub: Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10am-2pm
Come to Memphis Tilth and pack produce bags with fresh fruits and vegetables that were all grown within a 150 mile radius of Memphis. You will get a better understanding of our local food landscape and an opportunity to see our local food system at work. Children under 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
