10 Ways to Give Back To Memphis This Month (Feb. 2017)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love but publishing a monthly list of ten easy, fun ways to give back. Here’s the list for February.
1. Memphis Botanic Garden’s S’mores and Stars Party: Friday, February 3rd from 4-8pm
Enjoy a night under the stars, next to a campfire, roasting s’mores by volunteering with Memphis Botanic Garden. Volunteers are needed to help out at the craft and food/drink stations as well as be fire tenders and greet families who attend the event. The entire event is outdoors so please dress for the weather.
2. Carpenter Art Garden Valentine’ Day Yard Hearts Share: Tuesday, February 14th from 2:45pm-4:45 pm
Help to spread the love in Binghampton on Valentine’s Day by helping the kids of Carpenter Art Garden distribute painted hearts they’ve made. Volunteers will be put into groups with the kids and go door to door with them asking residents if they want a yard heart. If they do, then the volunteer will help the kid put the heart up in their yard.
3. Shelby Farms Park Weed Wrangler: Saturday, February 18th from 9am-12pm
Join Shelby Farms for a morning of service by helping to make the forest healthier. Volunteers will be working to remove invasive Chinese Privet. Ages 16+ welcome. Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves and water bottle.
4. VolunCheers benefitting Carpenter Art Garden: Tuesday, February 21st from 6-7:30pm
Join Volunteer Odyssey for a volunteer happy hour. It’s a great way to fit volunteering into your busy schedule and meet new people. Drinks and snacks are provided. Must be 21+
5. Dorothy Day House’s Lunch & Learn: Tuesday, February 28th from 11:30am-1pm
Learn more about Dorothy Day House and how they help homeless families by attending this event. It’s a great way to get connected with an amazing organization. You will also get a tour of the house and a free lunch.
6. Catholic Charities of West Tennessee’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance: every Thursday from 8:30am-3pm
You can help those in need prepare their taxes by volunteering with Catholic Charities. In order to be a volunteer, you must first be certified, but you will receive all materials and access to training through the organization.
7. Urban Bicycle Food Ministry’s Burrito Ride: every Wednesday from 7:30-9pm
Deliver burritos by bike to those who are hungry with UBFM. Volunteers meet at Carpenter House every Wednesday and split into groups to deliver burritos around midtown and downtown.
8. Make-A-Wish Foundation Wish Granter
Make a child’s wish come true by becoming a wish granter. Wish granting volunteers act as a liaison between the Make-A-Wish office and the wish families. Volunteers meet with prospective families to determine the child’s wish and then reveal to the child that their wish is coming true. Training is required before you can become a wish granter.
9. Memphis Crisis Center Volunteers Needed
The Memphis Crisis Center needs volunteer to help answer crisis line calls. You will be trained to help callers with their immediate problems and link them to the long-term resources they need to cope and overcome using empathetic listening and crisis intervention.
10. MIFA’s Meals on Wheels Delivery: Monday through Friday from 8:30-noon
Lend your wheels to deliver meals! MIFA delivers over 2,000 warm meals a day to homebound seniors, so they need more volunteers than ever. It’s an easy way to brighten the day of many seniors in your community.
