10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (December 2016)

Here is Volunteer Odyssey’s monthly list of unique ways to give back to Memphis!

1. I Love Memphis’ Cheering for St. Jude Memphis Marathon: Saturday, December 3rd from 10:15-2pm.


Come out and cheer on the runners, hold fun signs, enjoy light snacks, and support the St. Jude Heroes who are running for the kids with I Love Memphis. They will have some signs, but feel free to bring your own signs and noisemakers.   They will be standing at Mile 22.


  • Memphis Medical District’s Lights On! Volunteer Opportunity: Street Light Audit: December 6th from 5-7pm

Help to revitalize the Medical District! The goal of the event is to improve lighting and safety by recording non-functioning streetlights.  Volunteers are needed to drive around for 1.5-2 hours recording these non-functioning lights in the area.  Volunteers will also receive a hot cocoa-filled thermos and snacks for their help.

  • Volunteer Odyssey’s Pop Up Volunteer Party presented by CBIZ MHM: Tuesday, December 6th from 5-8pm


Stop by on your way to the Grizzlies game or to happy hour and volunteer for at least 101 seconds.  This is the easiest way to fit in volunteering.  Volunteers will be asked to complete projects for different non-profits from around Memphis.  Free beer will be available for those who are 21+.

  • Packaging Christmas Food Baskets: Saturday, December 10th from 7-11am

Neighborhood Christian Centers will be providing Christmas Food Baskets to 10,000 families in need, and volunteers are needed to help assemble these baskets.  This is a great opportunity for you to do with your family or friends, but there is a minimum height requirement of 58 inches.

  • Volunteer Odyssey’s VolunCheers benefitting Catholic Charities: Tuesday, December 13th from 6-7:30pm

Join Volunteer Odyssey for a volunteer happy hour.  It’s a great way to fit volunteering into your busy schedule and meet new people. Drinks and snacks are provided. Must be 21+

  • Church Health Center’s Card Writing Night: December 15th from 5:30-7:30


Help Church Health Center prepare mailers by addressing cards.  Free Beer and snacks will be provided during the event, and pizza will be served at the end.

  • Catholic Charities of West Tennessee’s Volunteer Saturday: December 17th from 9-12pm

Join Catholic Charities as they bag, sort, and inventory gifts for their Gift’s For God’s Children clients.  These gifts will put a smile on a lot of children’s faces and is a great way to volunteer with your family this Holiday season.

  • Gift’s for God’s Children: December 20th and 21st from 10am-3pm

Catholic Charities will be distributing Christmas gifts and food to over 300 households, and volunteers are needed to be “Turkey Wrangler’s”, “Sign In Elves”, “Santa’s Elves”, and “South Pole Traffic Coordinators”.  This is a simple and festive way to give back during this Holiday Season.

  • MIFA’s Meals on Wheels: Monday-Friday from 8:30am-noon

December is an especially busy month for the Meals on Wheels program.  With many of their regular volunteers out of town, MIFA needs extra hands to deliver over 2,000 meals a day.  This is an easy way to give back to your community and warm the hearts of your neighbors.

  • Memphis Crisis Center Volunteers Needed

The Memphis Crisis Center needs volunteer to help answer crisis line calls.  You will be trained to help callers with their immediate problems and link them to the long-term resources they need to cope and overcome using empathetic listening and crisis intervention.
