Win Tickets To The Day Of The Dead Fiesta!

Posted by Holly Whitfield | October 26th 2016 10781 0

There are plenty of parties this weekend, but if you want to celebrate something a little different, I have just the thing for you: Latino Memphis’ Day Of The Dead Fiesta on Friday night at the Cadre Building.

I’m giving away two tickets to the event ($100+ value). If you want to win a pair of tickets, just leave a comment on this blog post telling me you want to go – it’s that easy!

I’ll do a random drawing on Thursday, October 27 at 10 a.m.

Giveaway ended: congrats Tara! If you didn’t win, you can still buy tickets online until noon today (Thursday) or buy them at the door while supplies last.

If you don’t want wait, you can buy tickets here.

Not to be confused with Halloween, the Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrating and remembering loved ones who have passed away. You’ve probably seen the sugar skull makeup and decorations, and now you are invited by Latino Memphis to join in the celebration. Buy tickets here.

For this party, Latino Memphis will have:

  • tons of entertainment from the likes of Ballet Memphis, Co-Motion Studio, Catrinas, Aztec dancers, Colombian music, and much more
  • sugar skull face painting
  • photo booth
  • appetizers
  • drink (for purchase – a $20 bar ticket gets you 4 drinks or there’s a cash bar)
  • expect dancing!
  • super swanky atmosphere

The attire: skip the costumes, and wear black and white (either one or a combination) then have your face painted when you arrive.

The party begins at 7 p.m., ends at 11:30 p.m., and is for folks 21 and up. Take an Uber/Lyft/cab or park in a garage near the Cadre. Tickets are $50 per person online in advance (online sales close at noon on Thursday, October 27) or you can buy tickets at the door for $65.

Seriously, though – this isn’t another Halloween party, so it’ll be a faux pas if you show up wearing a Halloween costume.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

  40. Phuong Nguyen says:

Me! Me! Pretty please!? I’m dying to go, but tickets are kinda pricey.

Day of the dead is so similar to a Busdhist tradition that we practice in Vietnamese culture. We also have a special day when we honor our deceased ancestors and loved ones by placing offerings of their favorite flowers, fruits, food and liquor at their altar and lighting inscents. We do this almost daily but on that “holiday” we go all out and offerings get super lavish and intricate and spend a day in prayer. The cross-cultural overlap in rituals is so fascinating. I wonder if we can bring photographs of our loved ones at the fiesta to place on the giant altar? If so, it would be awesome to honor my mother.

    • April says:

Hi Phuong! It is so interesting to hear how similar these two traditions are! Latino Memphis definitely encourages you to bring photos of your loved ones for the altar. I’m so glad you asked about this, not very many people know about this tradition.

I would love to go to this festival because I never really have gotten to celebrate Día de los Muertos authentically. All throughout high school and college, I studied Spanish and Hispanic culture, and this is a unique experience o Mexican culture and history that we learned about. Even now, I teach ESL at Su Casa Ministries where a significant number of my students are if Mexican decent, and it would be fun to participate in this experience and share that with them. Thanks for the consideration!

I wanna party among the DEAD!

  45. Brisa Garcia says:
