Grind or Unwind at Tamp & Tap Downtown
Grind or Unwind at Tamp & Tap Downtown
The stylish mural painted on the brick wall inside Tamp & Tap downtown offers guests the option to Grind or Unwind, which is an appropriate message for a coffee and beer concept.
If you’re wondering about the name: the tamp is the metal thing for pressing grounds to make espresso, and the tap is of course, a beer tap. Tamp & Tap serves breakfast as well as inventive sandwiches and salads for lunch or dinner.
I went with a friend one morning for coffee. He got a vanilla latte, and I chose the brewed-to-order pour-over coffee, a process that takes about three minutes. The small coffee pot is delivered to your table on a wood block along with the mug, which was cool. The wait for our two drinks was longer than expected even with the pour-over process (they weren’t busy) but we were pleased when the coffee arrived.
I’m not an expert, but I can tell when I’ve got a good cup, and this was a good cup.
There are plenty of tables and chairs where people park with laptops and books, and a few more lounge-like seating areas that seemed like a good spot to enjoy an after-work beverage. The morning that we went, they had seven local and regional beers on tap.
Another time I went to Tamp & Tap after Trolley Tour; there was a decent crowd that night, and servers brought around complimentary popcorn topped with crispy leeks that went well with my High Cotton Saison summer ale.

You can park in garages nearby or metered spots if you can find them, and the building is ADA accessible. Kids with adventurous palates might like this spot during the day, and there are plenty of vegetarian menu items as well as some vegan baked treats at the counter.
Tamp & Tap also has a location in East Memphis.

There are meters (and a few of them are busted) on Front St., Peabody and Beale (by the Orpheum). There are also a few cheaper (i.e., $1 or so by the hour parking garages). All of these options are within a 1-2 block walk.
