5 Reasons To Celebrate 901 Day at Exposure

Posted by Holly Whitfield | August 24th 2016 6232 1

This year, I Love Memphis is getting in on the 901 Day action in an official event capacity. I’m working with New Memphis Institute for a big to-do we’re calling “Exposure”. It’s next Thursday, September 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

What It Isn’t

Exposure isn’t a strictly-professional networking event (though you could use it that way!) It’s not a big vendor market a la Cooper Young Fest. And it’s not a baseball game, even though it is at AutoZone Park. What is it, then, and why should you go?

In this month’s I Love Memphis Podcast Bonus Clip, Kevin and I discuss reasons to go and all the details. Click to listen and/or check out the list below.

1. It’s free to go and there are free donuts.
It doesn’t cost you anything to attend Exposure on 901 Day, and the first 250 people will get a free Gibson’s donut. Yum.

2. It’s going to be huge.

(TL;DR: A ton of Memphis entities – from sports to activities to breweries to local biz to non-profits – will be set up with free stuff and chances to learn more about those organizations.)

There’s a whole big list on the Facebook event of the more than 150 organizations , but picture: Grizz Girls and Claw Crew, local breweries with beer samples, University of Memphis Tigers Athletics folks, activites like escape rooms, canoe clubs, yoga studios, cultural institutions like the Stax Museum and Pink Palace, ways to give back like Volunteer Odyssey, and tons more. A lot of these groups will have swag to give away or fun things to do.

I’ll be there with the I Love Memphis mobile mural showing off some new I Love Memphis t-shirts and with plenty of stickers and other swag to give away.

3. Celebrity Kickball Game
Have you heard the rumor that Grizz and Rockey the Redbird are in an epic feud?** A feud that can only be settled by a zany Kickball Game on 901 Day? A game where our city’s two mascots will be team captains and pick between celebrity players like Moziah Bridges (yes, the Mo’s Bows kid), Al Kapone, Boo Mitchell, and Drake Milligan (aka young Elvis on the upcoming Million Dollar Quartet show)?

Because that’s a thing that’s happening at 8 p.m. at Exposure on 901 Day. Mayor Strickland will roll out the first pitch, yours truly will be calling the game, and you can cheer for your favorite local celebs in the stands while you enjoy a frosty brew and some food (both of which will be for sale).

**This is a total fabrication.

4. Full Lineup of Entertainment
The stage will be hopping all night, starting with opening band The Band Camino at 6 p.m. Other performers throughout the evening will include: Beale Street Flippers, Ballet Memphis, New Ballet Ensemble, an Elvis Tribute Artist, and more.

Opera Memphis will even kick off their 30 Days of Opera with a very Memphis opera performance.

5. Fireworks Finale
No explanation needed. Kaboom! Yay Memphis!

Thursday, September 1, 2016

6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Also a big shout-out to Independent Bank, a bank that – like Memphians – is independent-minded and not afraid to do things a little differently.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
