It’s the first day of summer, and Memphis weather has not been shy about it. The good news is that there are some easy ways to get through it without staying completely indoors until October. Listen to find out ways to escape (or embrace) the heat. Below I have a quick list and some links.

– Get a frozen treat.

Memphis knows how to make a delicious, icy-cold, frozen treat (with or without booze). There are so many options that number 1 on this guide is probably worth its own post. In the meantime, here’s a quick list:

Jerry’s Sno Cones
La Michoacana paletas and ice cream
MEMPops popsicles
Lunchbox Eats flavored Lemonade of the Day
Sweet Noshings ice cream and milkshakes
– Scoops gelato
– Hernando’s “The Dip” (aka Velvet Cream) for sno cones, shake, and ice cream
– Hernando’s Area 51 ice cream
– Slider Inn’s Jameson whiskey slushie
Mac’s Burgers’ slushie-style frozen lemonades, with choice of booze
I Love Juice bar smoothies and juices
– Boozy milkshakes from The ArcadeOshi Burger Bar, and A. Schwab

– Enjoy a Memphis patio
If you suffer from patio addiction despite the heat, there are a few spots that have gone out of their way with misters and fans to make their patio a little more palatable: Slider Inn, the Bayou, Aldo’s in midtown, Celtic Crossing, and Loflin Yard.

I’m looking for more. Let me know if you know of any patios with great fans and misters.

Click here for a full list of places to enjoy patios in Memphis (including info about which ones are Fido-friendly).

–  Head to a Memphis museum

Get thee to air conditioning! Check out the Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art, the Blues Hall of Fame, the National Civil Rights Museum, Stax, Rock ‘n’ Soul, Sun Studio, Railroad and Trolley Museum, Cotton Museum, to name a few.

Also, the Pink Palace has 3D movies in their CTI Giant Theater. Right now they have National Parks, Journey to Space, and Walking With Dinosaurs…and they’ll have a Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Secret Ocean opening on June 25.

–  Orpheum / Halloran Center Summer Movie Series

Enjoy the AC during the Orpheum’s summer movies (some of the films this year will be at the Halloran Center while the Orpheum undergoes renovations). Check out the lineup here.

– Play inside
There are plenty of places to play inside that the kids (or kids-at-heart) especially will love. Rec Room and Main Event are two good options for arcades and games. Try laser tag and arcade games at Golf ‘n’ Games on Summer, indoor trampolines at SkyZone or Jumping World USA, and tons of activities like arcade games, go-carts, and laser tag at Incredible Pizza in Cordova.

– Get In The Water

You can try several public parks in Memphis that have either public pools or splash parks. Here’s a list. Try Beale Street Landing (above), Peabody Park in midtown, the Children’s Museum, or dip your toes into the Riverwalk at Mud Island. If you’re a member of the Kroc Center in Midtown, they have a pretty sweet indoor pool and outdoor splash park.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
