Brazilian BBQ, Family Fun, a 5K, and More At The Latino Memphis 5K
Next Saturday in Memphis is going to be one of those crazy how-is-there-so-much-going-on-today kinds of days, and a big part of that is the Latino Memphis Festival and 5K in Overton Park.
The Latino Memphis 5K
The 5K starts on Saturday morning, May 7 at 9 a.m. and your $25 registration includes a goodie bag, t-shirt. free local and imported beer for runners 21+, and ... drumroll please: you'll get to be the first to try some free Brazilian BBQ. Ten Must-See, Must-Do Brazilian Things At Latino Memphis Fest
As for the festival itself, it's going to be a great time. It goes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Overton Park and is totally free and family-friendly. The honored country for this year is Brazil. Read more here and below.
I really liked Latino Memphis' run-down of "10 Must-See, Must-Do Brazilian Things At Latino Memphis Fest", so I'm going to repost this slightly edited run-down here (with permission):
1. Brazilian-infused Zumba and samba dance classes
2. Kids Carnaval area (in addition to Rainbow Lake Playground) with interactive performances, face painting, crafts, bubble soccer, and more.
3. Build a Batucada musical session with Brazilian instruments
4. Brazilian martial arts Capoeira sessio
5. Choro and Forró among other Brazilian rhythms
6. Take photos with Brazilian passistas (professional samba dancers)
7. Carnival leather mask decorating workshop ($15 - $20)
8. Soccer clinics and contests by Soccer Olé
9. Shop arts & crafts and take a cultural journey at the Brazilian Pavilion
10. Bring your appetite for Brazilian BBQ and your ID for a Caipirinha, the national cocktail of Brazil! (Beer and other food selections also available for sale)
A Word About Parking, Traffic, and Dealing With Midtown Next Saturday, May 7
Most of us are aware that the parking situation in the Overton Park/Zoo/Brooks area is a little strained. But with a very minimal amount of planning, we can all help make next Saturday go more smoothly. I may write more about this next week, but for now:
- Plan on walking, riding your bike, or at least carpooling.
- Take an Uber or Lyft (I can't say enough about how convenient this is, I basically never drive anymore if I'm going to a congested area).
- Plan on parking in the Overton Square garage (it's free during the day) and walking to the Overton Park area from there. It's less than a mile (aka less than a 20 minute walk) to the Brooks Museum from there.
And Now For The Free Beer, Brazilian BBQ, and Race Entry To The Latino Memphis 5K (Giveaway Ended - congrats to our winner Raquel)
You want to save $25 on an entry fee to the Latino Memphis 5K?
All you have to do is leave a comment on this blog post telling me why you want to run the race before Tuesday morning, May 3, at 9 a.m. I'll do a random drawing then and contact the winner via email.
That's it! Be sure to leave the comment on this blog post (not on FB or social media post).
